A Mammography Technician (Mammo Tech) is a specialized radiologic technologist who operates mammography equipment to perform diagnostic imaging procedures for detecting breast abnormalities. These images, known as mammograms, help to screen for breast cancer and other breast-related conditions. Mammography Technicians are trained to perform the procedure, ensure patient comfort, maintain a high standard of image quality, and assist in patient care throughout the process.

Performing Mammograms:

- Position and prepare patients for mammography exams, ensuring they are comfortable and properly positioned. n
- Operate mammography equipment to capture clear, accurate images of the breast tissue. n
- Ensure proper compression of the breast during imaging to obtain the best possible images while minimizing discomfort for the patient. n
- Assist patients with undressing and putting on a gown, as well as positioning the breast for imaging. n
- Perform digital mammograms and, if necessary, additional views to obtain complete images of the breast. n
Patient Care and Comfort:

- Greet patients and explain the procedure, answering any questions to alleviate anxiety. n
- Educate patients on the importance of mammograms, helping them understand the process and ensuring they know what to expect. n
- Reassure patients during the exam, maintaining a calm and empathetic demeanor. n
- Monitor patients for discomfort or any issues during the procedure and adjust accordingly. n
Quality Control and Image Evaluation:

- Review mammograms for clarity and completeness, ensuring the images meet diagnostic standards. n
- Ensure that images are free from artifacts or distortions that could hinder diagnosis. n
- Work closely with radiologists to ensure that high-quality images are produced and evaluate whether additional views or retakes are necessary. n
- Assist in conducting breast ultrasound or stereotactic biopsy procedures if needed to further investigate abnormalities found in mammograms. n
Equipment Maintenance and Safety:

- Ensure proper operation of mammography equipment, troubleshooting any technical issues as needed. n
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment, following safety protocols and manufacturer guidelines. n
- Follow safety standards for radiation protection to minimize patient and staff exposure. n
- Ensure the machine is calibrated and functioning correctly to provide optimal images. n
Record Keeping and Documentation:

- Maintain patient records, including medical history, previous mammogram results, and details of the current exam. n
- Document relevant patient information, such as imaging results, positioning, and any special instructions or requests from the physician. n
- Ensure all procedures, patient information, and images are properly logged into the hospital’s Electronic Health Records (EHR) system. n
Collaboration with Medical Team:

- Communicate effectively with radiologists and physicians regarding images that may require further attention or additional imaging. n
- Assist in explaining test results to patients, helping them understand what comes next in the process if further evaluation or follow-up is needed. n
- Work closely with the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care for the patient, especially if abnormal results are found. n
Adherence to Safety and Regulatory Standards:

- Ensure compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations regarding patient privacy and confidentiality. n
- Follow all radiation safety protocols to protect both patients and staff from unnecessary exposure. n
- Adhere to American College of Radiology (ACR) and FDA guidelines for mammography procedures and safety. n
Patient Education:

- Provide patients with post-exam care instructions and answer any questions regarding the results, follow-up, or potential next steps. n
- Educate patients on the importance of regular mammograms and breast health, including self-examination and lifestyle factors that affect breast health. n
