Job Purpose Summary

The National Memorial Day Parade (NMDP) Assistant Band Director supports the Head Band Director in preparing the district’s middle school or high school student ensemble for the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. This role leads rehearsals and coordinates sectionals at their assigned school, reinforcing marching and musical standards, and ensuring students are performance‑ready within the 41‑week preparation period. The Assistant Band Director helps implement the program vision, supports student engagement in music selection, and contributes to uniform planning that reflects the traditions, culture, and heritage of Adams 14.

Requirements

& Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in music, music education, or related field preferred
  • Three years successful marching band directing experience preferred
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to instruct, motivate, and manage middle or high school students in both music and marching performance
  • Knowledge of parade performance requirements, including marching technique, drill design, and field‑to‑street transitions
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel to Washington, D.C.
Key Functions,

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Program Leadership & Instruction
  • Lead rehearsals and coordinate sectionals for student participants at the assigned school in alignment with the Head Director’s 41‑week plan
  • Teach marching fundamentals, musical performance skills, and visual elements
  • Ensure students meet performance benchmarks and deadlines
  • Support integration of assigned school’s group into full‑ensemble rehearsals
Event Planning & Logistics
  • Assist with community and student engagement activities related to music selection for the parade
  • Support uniform planning, fitting, and readiness for assigned school’s participants, ensuring alignment with Adams 14 traditions and heritage goals
  • Help coordinate travel logistics, student safety, and supervision for the Washington, D.C. trip
  • Monitor and report equipment, uniform, and supply needs to the Head Director
Community & Collaboration
  • Maintain clear communication with the Head Director, other staff, and families
  • Support positive relationships between students, staff, and community stakeholders
  • Work with student leaders to promote mentorship and leadership opportunities within the group
Eligibility & Compliance
  • Ensure all student participants meet eligibility standards, including physicals, registration, and fees
  • Monitor academic standing and enforce CHSAA, district, and building‑level compliance

Evaluation and Stipend Determination

The site principal or designee will evaluate the fulfillment of duties at the end of the school year. Stipend determination will be based on the completion of the following responsibilities:

  • Rehearsals & Performances
    • Regular rehearsals and sectionals held at the assigned school
    • Students meet performance benchmarks for the NMDP
  • Community & Student Engagement
    • Participation in community/student engagement for music selection
    • Contribution to uniform planning and preparation
  • Professionalism & Leadership
    • Maintains respectful communication with staff, students, and families
    • Supports the Head Director’s 41‑week plan effectively
