Job Description - Manager, EMPI Data Integrity (2504627)

The enterprise master patient index (EMPI) is a critical business function and patient safety resource; it links a patient to demographics, clinical and financial information. The EMPI must contain accurate, timely, and complete data which supports the assignment of a single, unique identifier (EUID) to each patient registered within the Stony Brook Medicine health system.

The EMPI Data Integrity Manager (DIM), reporting to the Director of Patient Access Services, will be responsible for identifying cross system patient matches across the enterprise. Using analytical and investigational skills, the EMPI DIM will employ various system resources to validate patient identity and independently determining action needed to remediate duplicate medical records and demographic discrepancies.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, knowledge and understanding of patient care and effectively make decisions based on ethical principles and adhering to our high standard of excellence.

Responsibilities
  • Performs medical record number merges and patient data corrections, in accordance with Stony Brook Medicine standardized demographic collection policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes complex information and use problem solving skills to determine appropriate solutions and necessary merges to protect the integrity of the EMPI.
  • Utilizes reports and queues to investigate and resolve all cross system potential duplicate records in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Identifies local patient record matches across several disparate SBM source systems contributing MPI and patient demographic data to the Nextgate EMPI application. Completes actions necessary to join cross system patient matches under a single EUID.
  • Coordinates medical record merges, unmerges, EUID combines and necessary demographic changes in various systems throughout the health system continuum to achieve a single unique patient identifier and single best patient record.
  • Proactively and independently solves problems and operates with a high level of accuracy.
  • Exhibits excellence in communication, feedback, and follow through with IT application team, enterprise-wide hospital and physician practice peers.
  • Ensures all parties involved in making corrections in any disparate systems are promptly notified and validates that all corrections are executed in a timely manner.
  • Analyzes and identifies root causation of data discrepancies and communicates issues to the Director, business owners or IT team as appropriate.
  • Participates in process improvement activities, as well as the testing and implementation of product upgrades and enhancements, ensuring appropriate matching criteria and data capture is accurate.
  • Shares knowledge of new or developing issues with EMPI task force members and IT team members for problem solving and process development activities.
  • Provides instruction, training and oversight for EMPI Data Integrity Analyst in maintenance and integrity of local MPI.
  • Evaluates processes and provides necessary education and guidance to analyst. Serves as liaison to enterprise business owners, IT application team and HIM, as appropriate.
  • Constructs or contributes to local policy and procedures for ongoing EMPI management. Facilitate enterprise wide adoption of standardized procedures for demographic collection/naming conventions and monitor compliance.
  • May assist with daily quality assurance tasks and special projects as assigned by the Director or Senior Manager.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 3 years of hospital registration, HIM or HIT experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication, data analytics and investigational skills.
  • Candidate must demonstrate experience and expertise in speaking with interdisciplinary stakeholders, department leadership and staff.
  • Ability to understand work environment and competing priorities in conjunction with developing and meeting goals.
  • Ability to be adaptable and facilitate work in a complex, fast-paced, multi-site healthcare environment.
