Job SummaryAn experienced technician who performs Quality Audits on completed Locating Tickets and is responsible for a variety of tasks related to utility protection for a variety of utility clients. The Watch and Protect technician will oversee contractors digging on or around utility facilities and monitor excavation to help prevent damage to critical facilities.
Responsibilities- Perform Quality Audits – on‑site audits of completed work should include inspection of locate marks and marking standards for accuracy. Documentation includes E‑Sketch, billing and status codes, screen capture and photo review, and scope of the ticket’s work area. Focus on accuracy and marking standards during the audit. Any serious concerns found during audits should be communicated to the supervisor immediately and addressed on‑site.
- Watch & Protect – compare real‑world conditions to recorded documentation to identify errors and omissions. Verify location of all client facilities within specified dig extents. Watch and protect client facilities within a given area as directed by the client. Understand contractor’s means and methods for subsurface installations. Responsible for monitoring and providing surveillance of critical infrastructure where excavations are known to be taking place or will be taken place soon.
Contact excavators and schedule monitoring. Locate and mark underground facilities using industry tools, standards, and methods, including locating devices and utility maps. Perform ticket audits to ensure locators are accurately locating facilities and following proper marking procedures. - In order to obtain employment with Grid Hawk LLC, candidates must complete a background check. Company policy requires no violations within the last 5 years. Candidates must also take and pass a DOT drug test. All employees of Grid Hawk LLC are assigned proper technology and work vehicles in order to perform all work‑related duties.
- We will provide you the tools you need to achieve, including: company vehicle, laptop, and smartphone. Uniforms and all personal protective equipment are provided.
- High school diploma or GED certificate
- Valid driver’s license
- 2 years of experience in the locating industry
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to read and interpret prints at a high level
- Multiple years of locating and pipeline technician experience
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work smoothly with citizens, company, contractor representatives, and customers
- Good organizational skills to manage many varied tasks at once
- Knowledge and understanding of safe worksite practices
- Experience with the construction and installation of below‑grade infrastructure and basic maintenance of industry standard locating equipment
- Working within and utilizing existing utility standard designs
- Experience with complex urban underground utility infrastructure and serving as firm/client liaison
- Reviewing design drawings created by others
- Capable of moving about on construction work sites, public streets, and parkways
- Capable of lifting up to 75 lbs (50‑75 lbs as applicable)
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, or sit for extended periods
- Hand‑eye coordination necessary to operate computers and various measurement, locating, and testing instruments

- Work safely outside in all weather conditions year‑round
- Occasional work in excavations areas and roadways
- Occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration
- The noise level in the work environment is occasionally moderate to loud
Full‑time – hourly. Pay varies based on experience.
