Overview

Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, modifies, programs and repairs automated, electrical and electronic systems and equipment. Systems and equipment include but are not limited to: branch circuitry, power distribution, emergency power, fire alarm, security, public address, pneumatic transport, televisions, automated lighting, conveyors, and material handling systems.

Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects. May assist lower level technicians. Assists other trades as needed; adheres to all safety practices and procedures; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices; operates department vehicles;

and performs other duties as assigned. Actively supports our commitment to the university value of acting with integrity and personal accountability to establish a culture of professionalism in the workplace.

Shift & Hours

Shift: Third Shift. Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24 hour emergency call.

Abilities
  • Read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as built drawings.
  • Read, understand and apply safety standards and practices (e.g., hazard communication, infection prevention, lock‑out/tag‑out).
  • Read, interpret and apply technical manuals and system specifications.
  • Follow applicable trade specific codes, standards and regulations.
  • Learn technical skills and apply new knowledge to solve problems.
  • Use resistance and power equations to solve problems.
  • Select and use hand, power and machine tools.
  • Locate, disable and enable electrical disconnects and plumbing shut‑offs.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers; calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; use algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Instruct others to perform a task.
  • Provide guidance and expert advice about technical systems or processes.
Skills
  • Problem solving.
  • Troubleshooting systems (e.g., branch circuit, electric distribution, electronic, fire alarm pneumatic transport).
  • Conflict management (e.g., handle complaints, identify issues and negotiate).Basic computer: data entry, data retrieval, electronic communication, internet searches, navigate and retrieve information from websites, create basic reports using Microsoft Word.
  • Customer service (e.g., demonstrate empathy, meet quality standards, actively look for ways to help others).
  • Planning and prioritizing work.
  • Resource management.
Knowledge
  • AC/DC theory.
  • Electrical concepts used in Ohm’s Law.
  • Electric and electronic controls.
  • PLCs.
  • Fire alarm system design and operation.

  • Relationship of preventive maintenance and equipment life‑cycle.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years’ experience in electrical or electronic systems with a minimum of one year analyzing, troubleshooting and repairing electronic equipment and circuits, electrical and electronic logic circuits and/or computer hardware, software, and microprocessor‑controlled equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Obtain the following within the probationary period: valid OSHA 10‑hour General Industry Safety and Health card.
  • Successful completion of probationary period includes demonstrated competence in two of the following technical specialties as determined by the needs of the department: branch circuitry, electronic systems, electrical distribution systems, pneumatic transport systems, and fire alarm systems.
  • May require valid State of Ohio driver license.
