Function Statement: Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of mechanical systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all welded piping systems and equipment. Piping systems and equipment include, but are not limited to boilers, compressed gas systems, steam and condensate systems, air compressors, laboratory and industrial kitchen equipment, steam stations, heat exchangers, condenser water, condensate, chilled water and heating hot water.
Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects.
Assists other trades as needed; adheres to all safety practices and procedures; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; properly completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices; operates department vehicles; performs other duties as assigned. Actively supports the university value of acting with integrity and personal accountability to establish a culture of professionalism in the workplace.
Shift, hours, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24-hour emergency call.
Job DutiesIncumbents may perform some or all of these duties and other job-related duties as required.
Pipe fitting and Welding: (70%)
Installs, repairs and maintains all welded piping systems and components. Reviews blueprints and technical drawings; installs, repairs and replaces piping and components. Measures and cuts pipes using hand and power tools. Inspects and identifies leaks. Installs, certifies, repairs, replaces and performs preventative maintenance on piping systems and equipment (e.g., meters, valves, piping). Troubleshoots and resolves piping system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks).
Performs preventive maintenance tasks. Performs equipment installations (e.g., fans, pumps, heat exchangers, trapping stations, valving, and welded piping systems). Addresses customer queries. Cleans the work area after work completion.
General Duties (30%):
Technical Support:
Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes. Documents regulatory compliance tests. Inspects and tests installations and repairs to ensure they meet quality standards. Becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff. Troubleshoots and resolves field problems. May assist lower-level technicians. Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs. Updates building drawings. Participates on emergency response teams.
Communication / Record Keeping:
Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders. Submits material and equipment purchase requests. Provides feedback on materials. Creates estimates for small projects. Informs customers when tasks are completed. Communicates and initiates work order escalation, if needed.
Other Department Duties:
Participates in professional development/continuing education activities; obtaining and maintaining required certifications, soft skill development, etc. Participates in meetings, trainings, and orientations. Participates on emergency response teams. Interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department. May participate on committees. Performs other duties as assigned.
