Position Summary

The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine is seeking a Research Associate to coordinate and manage research on human/animal microbiome with an emphasis on the gut and urine microbiome in relation to host health. The Research Associate will plan and coordinate laboratory experiments; test and implement research methodologies and techniques; maintain laboratory records; trouble‑shoot protocols; collect, analyze, and evaluate research data; and develop next‑steps for each project.

This individual will coordinate and share regular updates on the progress of each project with the rest of the lab. This position will be responsible for the set‑up, operation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment; routine laboratory maintenance; ordering lab equipment and supplies; directing and authorizing purchases; negotiating pricing with external vendors; and ensuring compliance/certification with safety standards by laboratory personnel.

This position will also train and supervise students or other research personnel in ongoing research projects. As needed, this position will fulfill services (e.g. DNA extraction, culturing bacteria) for other labs or collaborators with the approval of the PI. This position will also coordinate pertinent research activities and other University educational and research functions. Additionally, this position will be expected to prepare portions of manuscripts, articles, abstracts, reports, grant proposals, and presentations, as well as perform independent analysis of scientific literature.

Duties may include assisting with sampling or processing samples from ongoing clinical trials (including but not limited to urine, feces, blood, serum, plasma, tissue), preparing media, culturing mammalian or microbial cells, extracting DNA or RNA, preparing samples for sequencing or other downstream processes, analyzing data, working with laboratory chemicals while following all appropriate PPE guidelines in relation to laboratory procedures, general laboratory maintenance, communicating regular status updates on progress or issues in the laboratory, and working with rodent models.

Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required.

DVM and Microbiome Research Experience Required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

May require pushing/pulling/lifting up to 25 lbs. May require repetitive motions for laboratory bench work. May require sitting/staring at computer screens for long periods of time. May require exposure to animal dander, animal handling including bites/scratches, and/or zoonotic diseases. May require exposure to needle sticks, hazardous chemicals, and/or hazardous waste.

Target Salary

$15.86 - $20.74 per hour; commensurate with experience, internal equity, the unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications.
