Youth Development
The Hardy Center is a community-based nonprofit organization serving children and families in the Linden neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The organization’s mission is to develop well-rounded, resilient young leaders by addressing the academic, social-emotional, and basic needs that directly affect health, stability, and long-term success. The Hardy Center operates year-round after-school and summer programs that combine academic enrichment, structured enrichment activities, and access to healthy meals.
Programming is designed to reduce barriers created by poverty and food insecurity by ensuring children have consistent academic support, safe environments, and opportunities to build life skills. A core component of the organization’s work is nutrition education and food access support, including hands‑on garden-based learning that teaches children where food comes from and how nutrition affects physical health, learning, and overall well‑being.
Duties
The Ameri Corps VISTA member will strengthen The Hardy Center by building systems that will strengthen food access and nutrition education for children and families. The member will focus on capacity‑building activities rather than direct service. Key responsibilities include developing volunteer coordination systems, ensuring documentation and standard operating procedures, and strengthening data tracking and reporting related to food access and nutrition education.
The member will play an important role creating tools that will equip staff and volunteers to work more efficiently. The VISTA member will also increase organization sustainability by optimizing donor and in‑kind resource tracking. Throughout the term, the member will work with staff to ensure systems are effective and sustainable beyond the VISTA service period.
