The Scout Reach District Executive

Coordinates resources of the council to deliver the Scout Reach program in target areas of the Simon Kenton Council. Develops extensive knowledge about the community, is involved and highly visible. Responsible for identification of chartered partners and organization of units to extend Scouting in target neighborhoods. Provides unit service, cultivates volunteers, and provides the necessary program support to enable units to succeed.

Gives staff guidance to the cultivating, recruiting, training, inspiring, and guiding of key volunteer and staff personnel.

  • Provide leadership to council’s program specialist staff; handle administrative, payroll and training functions for program specialist staff.
  • Be familiar with groups, community leaders, organization leaders, happenings, climate, and lifestyles of target areas as a basis for determining how scouting methods and program can be most meaningful to and most relevant for the neighborhood.
  • Become involved in selected community events and organizations to directly help the neighborhood and to become known, accepted, and trusted by neighborhood people.
  • Cultivate and recruit, in cooperation with volunteers and community contact people, adults for neighborhood committee and unit responsibilities as well as short term task-oriented assignments to provide service to units and members.
  • Personally assist volunteers and/or community people in the entire process of organizing, reorganizing, and rechartering units.
  • Maintain at least a monthly informal contact with units to develop a sustained, personal rapport with unit and organization leaders and to assure scouting credibility in the community. In addition, maintain a current detailed record of unit conditions.
  • Provide help with various problems of individual adult and youth members and act as a bridge between a family’s problems and community resources to help members survive and lead healthier and productive lives.
  • Recommend to council leadership how council operation can become more relevant to both neighborhood and scouting needs to help increase the appropriateness of council operation for the neighborhood.
Special Responsibilities
  • Maintain a uniform and loaned-equipment center.
  • Direct a Scout Day Camp - Project Camp.
  • Provide unit and neighborhood program resources and show volunteers how units can relate their program to the program of other organizations, agencies, and groups of the neighborhood.
  • Coordinate a non-Scouting event or block activity in the neighborhood using community residents block leaders and youth groups.
  • Utilize Council Leadership Luncheon and Whitney M. Young Award to conduct fundraising activities for Scout Reach programs.
Position Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree is desired or comparable training and human service experience in outreach and program coordination with at‑risk youth is acceptable. Adaptable and creative in fitting the Scouting Program and methods to the needs of communities, units and persons. Have persistent drive, great patience, and courage. Able to harness the resources of the community and to release the power within people to develop the potential of youth.
