Job SummaryMake a strong impact on ecological research and innovation as a Senior Marketing and Communications Specialist for the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), operated by Battelle and funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). In this generalist role, you’ll lead both strategy and execution, developing marketing and communications plans and bringing them to life through high-impact content, campaigns and communications.
Your work will energize internal and external audiences, elevate NEON’s visibility and amplify Battelle’s brand presence across key stakeholders. Consulting with leadership, employees and external partners—including the NSF—you will play a vital role in expanding the program’s visibility and nurturing engagement with key audiences and stakeholders. Your strategic vision and creativity will be instrumental in driving the success of our initiatives.
Reporting directly to Battelle's Director of Brand, Marketing Communications, you will be at the forefront of our mission to solve the world's most pressing scientific challenges. This hybrid role requires some travel (20%) to connect with stakeholders and bring the NEON story to life on a broader stage. It is based in Columbus, OH. NEON
NEON is a continental-scale observatory that collects long-term ecological data across the United States, including Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico. This open-access data is essential for understanding the dynamic changes in U.S. ecosystems. NEON's standardized data collection supports critical scientific research across various areas of science, providing valuable insights that drive informed decision-making and impact for the nation.
Responsibilities- Internal communications:
Develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies that inform and engage employees through leadership and employee messaging focused on brand, culture, mission, scientific and technological achievements, performance results and customer needs. Support internal engagement efforts, including all-hands meetings and other key employee events. - External Marketing and Communications:
Design, implement, optimize and monitor comprehensive integrated marketing and communications campaigns, as well as leadership presentations, that align with Observatory strategic objectives, enhance brand visibility and drive the use of NEON data, specimens and other infrastructure resources. Contribute to written reports to NSF/clients monthly, quarterly and annually. - Content Development and Management:
Lead content planning, creation and distribution across various channels, including the NEON website, blogs, social media and the NEON newsletter. Monitor analytics to optimize and track performance. - Brand Expansion and Consistency:
Expand the visibility and reach of the NEON program and the Battelle brand through marketing and communications, ensuring consistency across the program. - Media Relations:
Craft messaging and prepare leaders and subject matter experts for media interviews in partnership with the Battelle media relations team. Elevate storytelling and thought leadership with agency support to enhance NEON’s visibility and reputation. - Leadership Advisory:
Advise leadership on marketing and communication strategies and tactics to ensure alignment and achieve Observatory goals. - Unified Brand Voice:
Develop messaging and campaigns that seamlessly integrate the NEON program within the Battelle “Mission First, Safety Always” mindset to help foster a unified organizational culture across all initiatives. - Analytical Evaluation:
