Reporting to the Feed Mill Manager, this position supports animal research and educational programs for the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) by performing feed milling operations. The role performs technical duties for feed mill operations according to maintain regulatory and safety compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Operate computer-controlled batching systems to mix and process feed.
- Prepare premixes and weigh ingredients to meet research and herd nutrition objectives.
- Monitor bulk bin storage and ensure timely load-out of finished feed.
- Operate and adjust feed processing equipment.
- Prepares and fills bulk and bagged feed orders. Handles pallets of bagged feed ingredients and assists with loading and unloading trucks.
- Maintain accurate records for FDA compliance and inventory tracking.
- Guide and train student employees
- Assist with equipment maintenance and facility cleanliness.
- Communicate feed production status and coordinate delivery schedules.
- Support educational activities including tours and demonstrations.
- Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, FDA regulations and internal safety protocols.
- Monitor feedstuff quality and assist with pest control measures.
- Clean equipment to prevent cross-contamination.
High School diploma or GED. Certification or vocational training may be preferred. 1 year of relevant experience required. 2-4 years of relevant experience preferred. Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical tasks for extended periods, climb ladders and work on high structures.
Experience Desired- Experience in feed milling, grain handling, or animal feeding and nutrition.
- Ability to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other equipment.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to maintain and repair equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours or overtime as needed.
55% Performs feed milling operations to support animal research and education programs in the CFAES. Guides/trains student employees or less experienced staff. Backs up manager during absences. Keeps accurate records for withdrawal of feed ingredients to comply with US Food and Drug Administration regulations; measures and records weekly weigh-back inventory; assists with calculating amounts of ingredients for general herd rations and research diets to meet experimental objectives.
Monitors bulk bin storage capacity to receive feed stuffs and load-out of finished feed; also monitors grain and feedstuff quality and assists with pest control. Collects and submits feed and grain samples for lab analysis.
35% Operates computer controlled batching system to convey, mix and process feed. Weighs ingredients and accurately prepares premixes to meet research objectives. Operates pellet mill, grinders, mixers, and feed bagging equipment to ensure feeds are prepared according to quality standards. Cleans mixers and bucket elevators to minimize cross contamination. Assists with unloading and storage of delivered ingredients and supplies. Operates forklift, pallet jack and loads/unloads delivery trucks.
Communicates delivery schedules to animal operations and takes feed orders. Maintains and repairs feed mill conveying, mixing, and processing equipment; responsible for maintaining facility cleanliness.
10% Follows and encourages safe work practices with staff and student employees. Communicates feed production status to manager and provides feedback for efficient operations. Assists with tours and student demonstrations.
