Senior General Superintendent – Gilbane Building

Location: Columbus, OH

Overview

Lead field operations on one or more large projects, serving as a key member of the project team and being on site daily. Gilbane, a Top‑10 ENR Contractor, offers extensive career growth and a diverse, inclusive workplace.

Responsibilities
  • Direct and coordinate trade contractors and sub‑contractors to ensure high‑quality work meets approved schedule.
  • Supervise and develop the project team.
  • Manage the project budget for general conditions and Next 150/Site Services.
  • Develop, document, and communicate the work plan regarding changes made in the field.
  • Lead site walks with owners, architects/engineers, and financial institutions to review construction progress.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of contract documents to coordinate trades and anticipate potential problems.
  • Obtain or verify necessary permits and follow up with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for inspections.
  • Act as primary safety representative, monitoring performance and verifying compliance.
  • Develop safety strategies and drive safety culture across all project personnel.
  • Plan and manage “workarounds,” shutdowns, and tie‑ins.
  • Lead contractor meetings and ensure accuracy of daily reports.
  • Communicate schedule status, updates, and changes to the project team and trade contractors.
  • Coordinate and manage jobsite logistics.
  • Develop the Quality in Construction (QIC) plan in partnership with the Operations Excellence team.
  • Resolve jurisdictional disputes with support of Business Unit leadership.
  • Establish credibility with owners, trade contractors, unions, and other project partners.
  • Manage Next 150/Site Services material and crew needs.
  • Mentor and develop junior project team members.
  • Participate in business development and pre‑construction activities.
  • Administer Time and Materials (T&M) tracking.
  • Lead and develop ground‑up construction with foundation experience.
  • Engage with the community to foster local market relationships.
  • Collaborate with business development to integrate sales strategies and optimize profit levers.
  • Facilitate career development and coaching for team members.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Interpret and translate organizational strategy to the team.
  • Provide additional support to junior positions as required.

Experience/Education
  • BS or MS degree in Engineering or Construction Management.
  • 15+ years of experience on $100+ million healthcare, institutional, or advanced electronics projects; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong technical and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to participate in sales processes, interviews, and presentations.
  • Team collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Procore.
  • Construction‑document and drawing literacy, with knowledge of all construction phases.
  • Experience and proficiency in all divisions of work, methods, materials, scheduling, and cost control.
  • Deep knowledge and enforcement of construction safety processes.
  • Ability to create a safety‑first culture.
  • Experience supervising a project team.
  • Knowledge of labor relations.
  • OSHA 30‑hour certification.
