What you’ll do:

The Ohio Attorney General's Office is currently seeking a public‑minded individual for a Crime Scene Technician vacancy in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Section within the Crime Scene Unit. The position will primarily be remote, with occasional in‑person training and operational needs. The headquarters is located in London, OH.

BCI houses Ohio’s official crime lab and identification services, serving the state, county, and federal law‑enforcement communities. BCI provides expert investigative services to agencies upon request and is ready to respond 24/7 across the state.

BCI staff work daily to provide the highest level of service, including special agents on call 24/7, forensic scientists and specialists using cutting‑edge technology, and criminal‑intelligence analysts. The office has three main divisions:
1) Identifications,
2) Investigations, and
3) Laboratory.

The successful candidate must be willing to relocate within 90 days to one of the following counties:
Ashland, Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Hocking, Knox, Licking, Marion, Morrow, Pickaway, Richland, Ross, and Union counties only.

The duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Distinguish the full range of the color spectrum to visually and physically examine all types of crime scenes—including burglaries, vehicle crimes, thefts, assaults, abuse, criminal damage, officer‑involved incidents, and death investigations—and recognize, collect, and preserve physical evidence such as latent fingerprints, shoe prints, tire tracks, body fluids (e.g., blood), hair and fibers, weapons, and other materials in sometimes stressful environments.
  • Utilize a two‑way radio, MDC, and phone to communicate with diverse groups of people, both verbally and in writing, often under stressful circumstances.
  • Handle situations tactfully with co‑workers and citizens while demonstrating mutual respect for all individuals.
  • Answer questions over the phone and in person to provide information on policies, procedures, and resolve inquiries related to the area of assignment.
  • Conduct area searches on foot or in a vehicle.
  • Recover, unload, and impound firearms and other weapons using safe procedures.
  • Recover, transport, and impound various types of evidence, including human remains.
  • Measure and make advanced mathematical calculations and diagrams for complex crime scenes.
  • Prepare and utilize presumptive tests, chemicals, powders, compounds, and casting materials used in a forensic laboratory, preserving techniques as required.
  • Photograph various types of crime scenes and evidence, as well as post‑mortem examinations.
  • Utilize specialized equipment and procedures to determine the presence of body fluids and to collect body fluids, hair, fibers, gunshot residue, and other trace evidence.
  • Dust for and complete lifts for fingerprints.
  • Casts shoe impressions and other evidence preserving techniques as required.
  • Conduct interviews to gain relevant information for crime‑scene investigations or other investigations as necessary.
  • Compile all necessary information for the assigned crime‑scene investigation and enter detailed information into a computerized report‑writing program using appropriate grammar, punctuation, and report‑writing styles.
  • Drive to crime scenes to conduct investigations using a state‑issued vehicle from the residential office or an agreed‑upon location.
  • May be required to testify in court regarding scenes processed and evidence collected and preserved.
  • May provide specialized field training or train police officers, aides, and citizens in crime‑scene preservation.
  • May render opinions and draw conclusions in subdisciplinary areas such as footwear comparisons, bloodstain pattern interpretation, and bullet trajectory paths.
  • Complete and pass annual proficiency testing in crime‑scene processing.
  • Complete and pass competency testing as required.
  • Required to carry a firearm.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
