Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate coursework in criminal justice, physical or biological sciences (e.g., forensic biology, chemistry, physics) including laboratory testing experience and meeting the lab’s accrediting body requirements.
  • General knowledge of firearms and firearms safety preferred.
  • Or 2+ years of laboratory work experience in: firearms (NIBIN database entry and correlation review); or equivalent minimum class qualifications for employment as noted above.
  • Experience with NIBIN database entry, correlation review, and evidence handling, AND/OR OPOTA certification.

Unusual working conditions may include exposure to caustic chemicals, explosives, odors, firearms, drugs, decomposing tissue, physiological fluids, and contagious diseases; overnight travel may be required.

What You’ll Do:

The Ohio Attorney General's Office is currently seeking an experienced individual for a Forensic Science Laboratory Technician 2 vacancy in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) NIN Section, Richfield Ohio office. This position will report to the Richfield location daily. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation, known as BCI, is the state’s official crime lab serving the criminal justice community and protecting Ohio families.

BCI also provides expert criminal investigative services to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies upon request.

Responsibilities:
  • Operate the Brass Trax/Matchpoint (NIBIN) system.
  • Receive and manage evidence for entry into the NIBIN system.
  • Make firearms safe for laboratory staff to handle/examine.
  • Perform cursory examination of cartridge case evidence to determine best candidates for NIBIN entry.
  • Maintain all records relating to NIBIN, including casework documentation, data for confirmed hits and acquisitions, monthly statistics reported to the ATF, etc.
  • Issue NIBIN notifications/reports to law enforcement agencies regarding entries/results of searches (potential leads).
  • Maintain a workflow in which firearms evidence is entered into NIBIN and reported, following the ATF Minimum Required Operating Standards (MROS).
  • Maintain proficiency with NIBIN instrumentation and database evidence entry/correlations.
  • Testify in court on cases related to the examination of evidence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
