Description
Power BI System Administrator
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Power BI System Administrator for a three-month contract to support, optimize, and secure our Power BI environment. The contractor will help the organization adopt best practices around Power BI service operations; focused on system administration, governance, workspace management, user provisioning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and helping the organization adopt best practices around Power BI service operations. The contractor will partner with employees to train them in PBI administration practices.
This role is ideal for a hands-on administrator with strong Power BI Service expertise and experience managing enterprise data environments.
Key Responsibilities Administration & Governance
Manage and administer Power BI Service, including redesigning work spaces, datasets, dataflows, gateways, and capacities.
Establish, Implement, and maintain Power BI governance standards including naming conventions, workspace policies, and access controls.
Re-Configure and enforce security roles, row-level security (RLS), and data access governance.
Support the creation and enforcement of tenant settings and deployment pipelines.
Operational Support
Monitor system health, refresh schedules, gateway performance, and capacity usage.
Troubleshoot issues related to dataset refresh, gateway errors, permission conflicts, and report performance.
Maintain and optimize on-premises data gateways, including installation, upgrades, and clustering.
Work with IT and data engineering teams to ensure reliable connections to on-prem and cloud data sources.
User Support & Enablement
Provide administrative support to report developers, analysts, and business users.
Assist teams with workspace setup, permissioning, and publishing workflows.
Respond to and resolve user-reported Power BI Service issues in a timely manner.
Provide basic training on best practices for shared work spaces, dataset reuse, and refresh optimization.
Documentation & Process Improvement
Document system configuration, governance rules, support procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
Recommend improvements to Power BI environment architecture, governance, and operational workflows.
Provide end-of-contract handoff documentation and knowledge transfer to internal teams.
Required Qualifications
3-5+ years of experience administering Power BI Service in a production environment.
Strong understanding of Power BI architecture, including datasets, dataflows, gateways, and capacities.
Demonstrated experience managing Power BI tenant settings, workspace permissions, and security models.
Hands-on experience with On-Premises Data Gateway configuration and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with Power BI auditing, monitoring tools, and admin APIs.
Solid understanding of enterprise authentication/authorization (Azure AD, AD Groups, security roles).
Ability to diagnose complex refresh failures, capacity bottlenecks, and performance issues.
Strong communication skills with the ability to support both technical and nontechnical users.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Power Platform governance, or enterprise BI platforms.
Experience with Power Shell, scripting, or admin API automation.
Background in data engineering, report development, or SQL.
Experience working in regulated or large-scale enterprise environments.

This is a Contract position based out of Columbus, OH.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $65.00 - $100.00/hr.
