Power BI System Administrator

Hive+Co has a hybrid, contract opportunity with our client in Columbus, Ohio for a hands-on Power BI System Administrator to support, optimize, and secure Power BI environment. This role will focus on strengthening governance, improving service operations, and ensuring a stable, secure, and scalable Power BI Service environment.

The ideal candidate has strong enterprise-level Power BI Service administration experience and enjoys partnering with technical and non-technical teams to implement best practices.

Administration & Governance

• Administer Power BI Service, including workspace redesign, datasets, dataflows, gateways, and capacities
• Establish and maintain governance standards (naming conventions, workspace policies, access controls)
• Configure and enforce security roles, row-level security (RLS), and data access governance
• Manage tenant settings and support deployment pipelines

Operational Support

• Monitor system health, refresh schedules, gateway performance, and capacity usage
• Troubleshoot dataset refresh failures, gateway errors, permission conflicts, and performance issues
• Install, upgrade, cluster, and optimize On-Premises Data Gateways
• Partner with IT and data engineering teams to ensure reliable on-prem and cloud data connectivity

User Support & Enablement

• Provide administrative support to report developers, analysts, and business users
• Assist with workspace setup, publishing workflows, and permission management
• Respond to and resolve Power BI Service issues in a timely manner
• Deliver training and guidance on workspace best practices, dataset reuse, and refresh optimization

Documentation & Process Improvement

• Document system configurations, governance standards, support procedures, and troubleshooting guides
• Recommend improvements to architecture, governance, and operational workflows
• Provide thorough end-of-contract documentation and knowledge transfer

• 3–5+ years administering Power BI Service in a production environment
• Strong knowledge of Power BI architecture (datasets, dataflows, gateways, capacities)
• Experience managing tenant settings, workspace permissions, and security models
• Hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting On-Premises Data Gateways
• Familiarity with Power BI auditing tools, monitoring, and Admin APIs
• Solid understanding of enterprise authentication and authorization (Azure AD, AD Groups, security roles)
• Ability to diagnose refresh failures, capacity bottlenecks, and performance issues
• Strong communication skills and ability to support technical and non-technical users

• Experience with Microsoft Fabric or Power Platform governance
• Power Shell, scripting, or admin API automation experience
• Background in SQL, data engineering, or report development
• Experience in regulated or large-scale enterprise environments
