Power BI Solutions Consultant

We are looking for an experienced Power BI System Administrator to join us on a three-month contract. This role will focus on supporting, optimizing, and securing our Power BI environment. The contractor is expected to drive best practices in Power BI service operations, especially in system administration, governance, workspace management, user provisioning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and training staff in Power BI administration.

This opportunity is ideal for someone hands-on, with deep expertise in Power BI Service and experience managing enterprise data environments.

• Oversee and manage Power BI Service, including redesigning work spaces, datasets, dataflows, gateways, and capacities.
• Establish and uphold Power BI governance standards, such as naming conventions, workspace policies, and access controls.
• Configure and enforce security roles, row-level security (RLS), and data access governance.
• Support tenant settings and deployment pipelines.

• Monitor system health, refresh schedules, gateway performance, and capacity usage.
• Troubleshoot dataset refresh issues, gateway errors, permission conflicts, and report performance problems.
• Maintain and optimize on-premises data gateways, including installation, upgrades, and clustering.
• Collaborate with IT and data engineering teams to ensure stable connections to both on-premises and cloud data sources.

• Provide administrative support for report developers, analysts, and business users.
• Assist with workspace setup, permissions, and publishing workflows.
• Address and resolve user-reported Power BI Service issues promptly.
• Deliver basic training on shared workspace best practices, dataset reuse, and refresh optimization.

• Document system configuration, governance guidelines, support procedures, and troubleshooting processes.
• Suggest improvements to Power BI architecture, governance, and operational workflows.
• Prepare end-of-contract handoff documentation and transfer knowledge to internal teams.

• 3–5+ years of Power BI Service administration in a production environment.
• Strong grasp of Power BI architecture, including datasets, dataflows, gateways, and capacities.
• Proven ability to manage Power BI tenant settings, workspace permissions, and security models.
• Hands-on experience with On-Premises Data Gateway setup and troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with Power BI auditing, monitoring tools, and admin APIs.
• Solid understanding of enterprise authentication/authorization (Azure AD, AD Groups, security roles).
• Expertise in diagnosing complex refresh failures, capacity bottlenecks, and performance issues.
• Excellent communication skills to support technical and non-technical users.

• Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Power Platform governance, or other enterprise BI platforms.
• Knowledge of Power Shell, scripting, or admin API automation.
• Experience in regulated or large-scale enterprise environments.
