** Hub at The Ohio State University is a university-wide initiative to accelerate research, innovation, and education in artificial intelligence. It spans 15 colleges and aims to unlock exponential possibilities by fusing AI with expertise across six strategic pillars: foundations, health, engineering and sciences, agriculture, cybersecurity, and trustworthy AI.
** Job Overview
** This staff position is dedicated to the AI for Health Pillar, focusing on the development of AI solutions for diverse health-related applications. The Research Scientist will act as a primary technical lead and consultant, working with multidisciplinary experts across the OSU campus -- for example, including physicians, engineers, and scientists -- to design, implement, and scale innovative AI solutions. A key component of this role is bridging the gap between clinical needs and technical AI capabilities to foster high-impact health outcomes.
** Key Responsibilities
*** Consulting and Solution Design:
Provide expert technical consultation to faculty and staff to identify AI opportunities and design tailored AI-based solutions for health-related challenges.
* Research Leadership:
Lead and support innovative team science research initiatives, advancing technology within the AI(X) Hub and the broader health care community on campus.
* Interdisciplinary
Collaboration:
Work within large, highly interdisciplinary teams to translate complex health problems into actionable and scalable AI projects.
* Grant and Project Development:
Contribute significantly to grant development, securing external funding (e.g., NIH, NSF, ARPA-H), and managing the lifecycle of AI for Health programs.
** Required Qualifications
**
* Education:
Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Biostatistics, or an equivalent/related terminal degree.
* Research Expertise:
Demonstrated experience in conducting independent and collaborative research in AI for health, such as AI-driven therapeutics discovery, precision medicine, and AI implementation in health systems.
* Collaboration:
Proven track record of working effectively in large teams such as those comprising physicians, administrators, and researchers across science, engineering, and medicine.
* Communication:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
* Scientific Rigor: A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals or proceedings.
* Technical Proficiency:
Proficiency in modern AI methods and tools (e.g., Large Language Models, instruction tuning) and experience with large-scale health datasets (e.g., electronic medical records, PCORI, histopathology and radiology images, multi-omics high-throughput sequencing data).
** Desired Qualifications
*** Funding:
Experience in grant writing and development for health-related opportunities, specifically NIH or similar agencies.
* Operational Knowledge:
Familiarity with health systems, health IT, hospital environments, and the ethical considerations of AI in healthcare.
* Management:
Experience in project management, research administration, and mentoring junior researchers or students.
* Software Engineering:
Experience with deploying AI models into production or clinical workflows.
