The Immediate Care Center is a specialized unit within The James that provides same‑day care for oncology, hematology, and sickle cell patients. While it operates with the urgency and responsiveness of an acute care setting, it is distinct from both traditional outpatient clinics and the Emergency Department. Patients are typically more stable than those seen in the ED but still require timely evaluation and treatment.
Referrals are coordinated directly through the patient’s oncology team, often based on real‑time clinical concerns that need same‑day attention. This approach helps reduce unnecessary ED visits and ensures rapid access to specialized care, supporting Ohio State’s commitment to exceptional outcomes and efficient care delivery. The unit’s smaller footprint fosters strong collaboration and a supportive team culture. Nurses develop a broad skill set while managing a range of oncology‑related conditions and build meaningful relationships with patients throughout their treatment course.
