Description

Chaplain provides Spiritual Care within his/her local ministry, addressing the spiritual needs of patients, participants, residents, families, and colleagues, with a focus on spiritual distress, grief support, crisis intervention, and support during significant life changes. As a fully integrated member of the health care team with professional expertise in Spiritual Care, the chaplain works alongside other care givers, responding to the spiritual needs of those served.

Develops, conducts, and participates in programs of spiritual care to promote healthy communities and sacred environments, while facilitating the inclusion of faith leaders from churches, synagogues, mosques, and other faith traditions in the provision of Spiritual Care as appropriate. Reports directly to the Manager of Spiritual Care and, in some cases, to an immediate ministry site supervisor as appropriate.

Position Purpose

  • Works as a fully integrated member of the health care team with professional expertise in Spiritual Care; responds to the spiritual needs of those served.
  • Develops, conducts, and participates in programs of spiritual care to promote healthy communities and sacred environments; facilitates inclusion of faith leaders from various traditions as appropriate.
  • Reports to the Manager of Spiritual Care or site supervisor as appropriate; may perform other duties as assigned.

What You Will Do

  • Make available, deliver, and facilitate transformative Spiritual Care experiences to patients, residents, participants, visitors, and colleagues across the healthcare continuum, honoring and respecting religious beliefs, practices, and values within the total healing process.
  • Assess religious and spiritual needs (including ethics consultations) and provide interventions or referrals based on assessed needs.
  • Make timely, professional observations of outcomes and adjust the provision of Spiritual Care as needed.
  • Document in the electronic medical record professional Spiritual Care assessments, interventions, and outcomes with appropriate plans of care.
  • Integrate the Spiritual Care dimension of healing as a full clinical member of the inter-professional healthcare team.
  • Collaborate with the Spiritual Care Manager to measure, evaluate, and improve Spiritual Care processes in line with Mission Integration strategy and system-wide objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education:

    Master’s degree in Theology, Religion, Spiritual Care or Spirituality, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licensure / Certification:
    Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) strongly preferred via APC, CASC, NACC, or NAJC, including completion of a master’s degree as required by the certifying agency, 4 ACPE-accredited units (1600 hours), and faith-based endorsement as recognized by the certifying agency.
  • Experience:

    1–3 years of Spiritual Care experience, including CPE training; chaplaincy or Spiritual Care ministry experience preferred. An equivalent combination of experience may be considered.
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to set and organize own work priorities and adapt to change; capability to work on multiple tasks in a potentially stressful environment with diverse personalities
  • Ability to travel regionally across Mount Carmel sites (10–50%) as needed
  • Ability to comply with Trinity Health policies and procedures
