Job Description SummaryThe duties of this position include but are not limited to accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness. Position utilizes automation and computerization, and manual methods. Responsible for quality control and instrument operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. May be involved in teaching and training, but not in a leadership position. Position handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other body fluids.
Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens.
- Use critical thinking, academic theory, facilitation and leadership abilities, and advanced customer service skills.
- Perform complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues; determine the reliability of analytic data before releasing as patient measurements for diagnosis and treatment.
- Interpret information to make judgmental decisions and troubleshoot technical procedures and instruments.
- Utilize knowledge of medical correlation of data, laboratory parameters, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific medical treatments to assess the validity of laboratory data.
- Use appropriate testing techniques to evaluate new testing methodologies and practices.
- Demonstrate safety and infection control practices.
- Provide mentorship to new lab associates and students.
- Customer service to clinicians and clients. Communicate professionally on the telephone with physician staff offices, clinical staff, and all laboratory associates. Communicate with patients and their families, using service recovery when necessary.
- Quality assurance functions and equipment maintenance. Perform quality control checks on procedures, equipment, reagents, stains, etc. Document and interpret all QC data used by technologists to determine validity of patient results and verify instrument performance. Review maintenance logs to assure optimum system performance, guaranteeing valid data and eliminating costly downtime.
- Continuing education and competencies. Remain current in field. Train new employees and students. Maintain competencies and mandatory education requirements (ACE).
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree (Required) ASCP - American Society for Clinical Pathology; AMT Certification considered equivalent to ASCP; or completion of all required coursework for Bachelor’s degree and completion of ASCP Certification.

Four year Bachelor of Science Degree. Registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. AMT Certification is considered equivalent to ASCP. Or completion of all required course work for Bachelor’s degree and completion of ASCP Certification. Superior customer service skills. Experience in an automated clinical laboratory.
