Job Title: Laboratory Research Operations Analyst S1

Department: Medicine | Orthopedics

Position Description

The Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory within the Department of Orthopaedics at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is seeking candidates for a Laboratory Research Operations Specialist position with immediate need. Ambitious, self-motivated, hard-working graduates interested in a full-time position near the main Ohio State University campus in Columbus, OH, are welcome to apply. This opportunity is supervised by Vice Chair of Research Dr.

Nathaniel Bates, PhD. The successful applicant will engage in clinical and laboratory-based research across multiple divisions within the Department of Orthopaedics. Through this diversity of projects, publication opportunities in peer-reviewed medical journals are anticipated.

  • Responsibilities (primary roles)
    • DATA CURATION (estimated 65% FTE)
      • Data Collection – lead laboratory data collections of live patient and cadaveric studies, including setup, teardown, specimen handling, and dissection. Learn and operate multiple technical systems (3D motion analysis, Electromyography, embedded force platforms, mechanical simulators, and other laboratory technologies).
      • Data Management – curate, organize, clean up, refine, and process laboratory data from collection through termination, supporting multiple ongoing projects and preserving dataset integrity.
      • Data Analysis – under guidance, learn and participate in statistical analysis to prepare results for publication using university-provided and public-domain software.
    • STUDY COORDINATION (estimated 15% FTE)
      • Assist in development and submission of protocols to the OSU IRB, recruit and consent subjects, and maintain study records per IRB standards.
      • Prepare laboratory facilities and equipment for data collection and maintain a professional research environment.
    • DATA DISSEMINATION (estimated 15% FTE)
      • Assist in creating abstracts, manuscripts, reports, figures, and tables related to laboratory projects.
      • Contribute to development and submission of extramural funding applications, but not responsible for independent proposal curation.
    • MULTIDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION (estimated 5% FTE)
      • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team across neuroscience, engineering, health sciences, and medicine, under Dr. Bates.
      • Aid in fostering internal and external relationships to generate new project opportunities for the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory.

This position is tied to funding and is a 2-year opportunity with potential for extension based on resource availability. Candidates should hold a BS in engineering, health sciences, kinesiology, or related field, with a tangible interest in research, a strong academic record, independence, and high motivation. Strong organizational skills are required to manage multiple projects. Proficiency in programming languages such as MATLAB and Python is essential.

Experience with statistics and statistical software is preferred. Experience with motion analysis is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. 0 years of relevant experience required. 0-2 years of relevant experience preferred.
