Veterinary Public Health Resident – Animal Health Emergency Management

Applications are now being accepted for a Veterinary Public Health Resident / Graduate Associate position focused on Animal Health Emergency Management in Ohio. The selected candidate will participate in the Veterinary Public Health Residency, an American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM)-Certified Training Program housed within the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine at The Ohio State University.

The residency program is divided into three concurrent tracks over a three-year period:

• Academic Training
  :
  Pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree through the OSU College of Public Health, specializing in Veterinary Public Health, while supporting and contributing to veterinary curricula and scholarly activities.
• Animal Health Emergency Management
  :
  Work closely with OSU faculty, the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), USDA-APHIS-VS, and other emergency coordinators.
  
  Responsibilities include:

• Developing state emergency response plans
• Designing and facilitating tabletop and field exercises for foreign animal disease (FAD) scenarios
• Providing training and education to regulatory officials, veterinarians, and producers
• Actively participating in response efforts during FAD outbreaks or other animal health emergencies

Additional responsibilities: pursue advanced Incident Command System (ICS) training; attend relevant workshops and conferences related to FAD response; coordinate and participate in the ACVPM OSU study group for the Board Certification Examination.

Program Outcomes
:
Complete MPH‑VPH degree, receive a Veterinary Public Health Residency Certificate, and be eligible to sit for the ACVPM Board Certification Examination.

Professional Development
:
Gain skills in infectious disease epidemiology, food protection, environmental health, emergency response and preparedness, One Health communication, project management, and multi-disciplinary coordination.

Additional Information

Compensation includes a monthly stipend comparable to graduate students at the College of Veterinary Medicine; tuition costs are covered for the full duration of the program. The program begins Spring 2026 and is expected to be completed no later than May 15, 2029.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must hold a DVM/VMD degree from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine and meet OSU College of Public Health MPH admission requirements.

Desired Qualifications

Excellent oral and written communication skills, teaching experience, demonstrated leadership, and ability to work in a team are desirable. Experience in livestock production, infectious disease management, farm biosecurity, emergency response, or outbreak investigation (1‑3 years) is highly desirable but not required.
