Job Description SummaryThe Staff Chaplain provides pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients, family members/significant others, and staff throughout the hospital. The role involves developing a "parish" within the hospital, serving as a member of the ecumenical pastoral care staff, and participating in staff meetings, on‑call responsibilities, and hospital-wide worship experiences.
Responsibilities and Duties- Provides ongoing, hands‑on ministry to patients, families, and staff, including counseling, prayer, sacramental ministry, response to "codes," and education about advance directives (65%).
- Shares rotation of all on‑call responsibilities as needed (10%).
- Participates as a member of hospital interdisciplinary teams; serves on the Pastoral Care Department and general hospital-wide committees (10%).
- Attends Pastoral Care staff meetings and retreats (5%).
- Supports and performs responsibilities related to the hospital decedent care program, such as grief counseling and assisting with paperwork (3%).
- Acts as liaison between local clergy, patients, families, and staff (2%).
- Participates in policy development, strategic planning, and evaluation of the Pastoral Care Department (2%).
- Assists in responding to requests for workshops, lectures, etc. from the hospital, church, and community (2%).
- Shares responsibilities for providing a variety of worship services, including memorial services (1%).
- Master's Degree (Required)
- CPE – Clinical Pastoral Education – Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
Job Description
• Degree in Theology/Human Relations from an accredited theological school, university, or seminary; or four to ten years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of experience.
• Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education; ordained, licensed, vowed, or endorsed by a denomination.
• Knowledge of pastoral care and counseling skills, especially as practiced within the hospital setting.
• Eligibility for Certification by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or as a fellow by the College of Chaplains.
• Two years of ministry experience; at least one year in a hospital setting.
