Summary

Assists in surgical operations under the supervision of Surgeons, Registered Nurses and Surgical Assistants. Supports the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established federal, state and accreditation standards and company policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs duties in an ethical and legal manner within the scope of certification.
  • Complies with HIPAA regulations.
  • Scrubs all types of cases performed at the company.
  • Anticipates the needs of the Surgeon and ensures equipment, medical gases and supplies are readily available.
  • Participates in continuing education, staff meetings and quality initiatives.
  • Opens all sterile packs according to sterile technique and prepares instruments as needed.
  • Sets up surgical instruments, ensures equipment works properly, labels sterile solutions.
  • Gathers supplies and equipment in the room.
  • Records medications used intra‑operatively, specimens retrieved, implants, etc.
  • Passes instruments and other sterile supplies to surgical assistants.
  • May hold retractors, cut suture, help count sponges, needles or blades if applicable.
  • Prepares, cares for and disposes of specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Operates sterilizer, lights, suction and other operating room equipment.
  • Assists in patient transfer to PACU if needed.
  • Cleans and restocks the operating room.
  • Assists with technical functions under supervision of system to ensure safe operation.
  • Preps, drapes and positions the patient for surgery.
  • Prepares case according to Surgeon’s preference card.
  • Anticipates needs for case and gathers supplies.
  • Assists in orientation of new staff when needed.
  • Actively participates in the development of a healthy work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and implement patient care within scope of practice.
  • Capacity to handle stress associated with prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Manual dexterity to handle instruments.
  • Emotionally conscientious, orderly and stable to handle the OR environment.
  • Ability to adhere to work schedule, be organized, manage time effectively.
  • Above‑average organization skills.
  • Effective teamwork capabilities.
  • Above‑average communication skills: verbal and written.
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Two (2) years of hospital main operating room experience preferred.
Licenses and Credentials
  • Certified Surgical Technician (CST) certification preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Systems and Technology
  • Knowledge of Amkai Charts Database software and Microsoft Word.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.
Physical Demands
  • Requires repetitive walking, sitting, standing, bending, stooping and reaching.
  • Capable of lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling items up to 25 lbs.
  • Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands essential.
  • Visual and auditory acuity required 100% of the time.
  • Occasional driving or climbing may be necessary.
