Blood Bank Technologist-Transfusion Service role at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
Medical Technologist prepares blood components for transfusion. Preparation of blood components includes receiving blood products from outside sources, thawing FFP/ Cryoprecipitate, and allocating blood products for transfusions. Technologists process specimens to include entering test results into the computer system, ABO/RH typing, cross matching, antibody screening and identification. The medical technologist receives telephone inquiries regarding specimens, test results, and product availability. The medical technologist is responsible for issuing blood and blood products for patient transfusion.
Staff must maintain patient files and distribute supplies within the department. This is a very complex transfusion service and serves a very diverse patient population. The department is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days a week.
- Receive blood products from outside sources; thaw FFP/ Cryoprecipitate; allocate blood products for transfusions.
- Process specimens: enter test results, perform ABO/RH typing, cross matching, antibody screening and identification.
- Handle telephone inquiries regarding specimens, test results, and product availability.
- Issue blood and blood products for patient transfusion; maintain patient files; receive and distribute supplies within the department.
- Participate in quality control, quality assurance and general laboratory duties such as filing and data entry; support other duties and projects as needed.
- Work in a 24/7 transfusion service environment.
- The Medical Technologist processes patient specimens including ABO/RH typing, cross matching, and antibody screening/identification.
- Handles phone inquiries regarding patient results, specimen collection, and product availability.
- Participates in quality control/assurance and general laboratory duties; other duties and projects as assigned.
For Hire: Bachelor’s degree in medical technology with MT/MLS (ASCP) or equivalent certification; or bachelor’s degree in bioscience with post-degree experience in a clinical lab setting or equivalent combination of education/experience. Applicant must obtain MT/MLS certification within 1 year of hire.
On going: Meets minimum continuing education requirements of contact hours and health surveillance requirements. Demonstrates competence in technical, interpersonal and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions.
