Job Description
WSP is searching for an Early Professional, Civil Engineer for our Ann Arbor, Michigan office. Columbus, Ohio is also a considered location. The role will engage in projects with our Power Delivery Ann Arbor Line Team to help meet client objectives and solve challenges.
This OpportunityThe successful candidate will handle all aspects of transmission line design for new lines, relocations, upgrades, and fiber‑optic additions. The power grid is a critical infrastructure; our engineers oversee long‑term line health by developing structure loads, selecting hardware, and setting operating clearances for varied weather conditions. We use PLS CADD Modeling software and aerial imagery to create full route representations and interact with utilities and construction partners.
Tasks include model design, material procurement, and producing professional drawings to support construction.
- Under general supervision, collect, compile, and analyze data from the site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utilities, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
- Conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions to ensure compliance with rules, standards, and permits.
- Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry‑level technical assistance on design requirements and operating strategies.
- Verify site characteristics and give basic technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues.
- Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field logs.
- Comply with safety guidelines and site‑specific procedures, including location data, documentation, studies, and surveys.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) from an accredited university.
- Strong command of English with good written and oral communication skills.
- Experience using Microsoft Office.
- 0 to 1 year of post‑education experience.
- Excellent research skills and analytical mindset.
- Familiarity with design/build process and concepts.
- Knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Competent interpersonal and communication skills with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
- Self‑leadership with attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
- Basic technical writing and office automation skills.
- Track record of upholding workplace safety and adhering to WSP safety and drug/alcohol policies.
- Flexible schedule to accommodate project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond a typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
- Familiarity with discipline‑specific design software (Micro Station, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, Geo Slope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS).
- Prior internship related to the degree and engineering discipline.
- Active participation in local professional practice organizations.
- Minimum GPA of 2.75.
- Relevant coursework: structural analysis, concrete design, steel design, soil mechanics, foundation design, surveying.
- Prior engineering design or drafting experience, especially in civil/structural engineering.

CompensationExpected Salary (all locations): $59,200–$96,030. WSP USA reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to protected status.
