Here at the Alice Cogswell Center (ACC) and Early Learning Center (ELC), we follow a child centered approach. At the ELC, we serve children ages 3-5 with hearing loss, and students with visual impairments. We provide hands-on activities to support social, emotional, physical and educational growth, including fine and gross motor, art, language and literacy, math, and other group activities with a focus on communication, self-esteem, respect and caring for others.
Job DescriptionThis is a reposted position. The Early Learning Center seeks dynamic applicants who are diverse learners’ supporters. Applications will be reviewed for both Instructional Aide and Instructional Aide Trainee. Candidates not meeting Instructional Aide qualifications may be considered for Instructional Aide Trainee.
Instructional Aide
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist teachers of students who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing or deafblind and/or students with multiple disabilities in academic instruction, vocational and/or daily living skills; tutor and/or conduct group or individual lessons; ensure safety and well-being of students; provide counseling and monitor behavior; support use of adaptive technology; assist with meals and transportation needs; follow teacher plans when necessary to continue instruction.
- Assist in preparation of lesson plans and materials; support technology integration; create instructional media and operate equipment; participate in IEP data collection and conferences; assist in documentation and progress reporting.
- Perform clerical tasks related to educational duties and assist in classroom setup and maintenance.
- In the Alice Cogswell Center, prepare and carry out programming for children birth to pre-school transition; ensure a safe, supportive learning environment; attend in-service trainings and staff meetings.
Instructional Aide Trainee
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receive training and mentoring to assist teachers in daily living skills and academic instruction; escort students to/from classes and field trips; monitor lunch and movement; perform clerical tasks and prepare instructional media; attend meetings and case conferences.

QualificationsInstructional Aide
Qualifications:
Must possess current Educational Aide Permit as issued by the State Board of Education; 12 months of teaching assistance experience.
Note:
Intermediate level SLPI required upon hire for Ohio School for the Deaf.
Instructional Aide Trainee
Qualifications:
Must possess current Educational Aide Permit as issued by the State Board of Education.
Note:
Intermediate level SLPI required upon hire for Ohio School for the Deaf.
Training and Development Required to Remain in Classification: Renewal of Educational Aide Permit per State Board rules; CPR and first aid certification within 1 year of hire; van certification if transporting students; advanced SLPI required for Ohio School for the Deaf within 1 year.
For Instructional Aide Trainee: eligible to be reassigned to Instructional Aide 18812 upon successful training and certification within probationary period.
Unusual Working ConditionsMay work evenings and/or weekends; may work outdoors; may encounter aggressive or unpredictable behavior, exposure to human waste and infectious diseases.
