Overview
The Department of Geography at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Associate Professor. We seek a promising scholar with research and teaching expertise in quantitative political geography, and with the demonstrated potential to emerge as a leader in the field of conflict studies. Outstanding opportunities for collaboration exist with other campus centers and units, including the Translational Data Analytics Institute, Sustainability Institute, and the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center.

Required
:
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Geography, Atmospheric Science, Meteorology or a closely related field. We seek a colleague with research expertise in one or more of the following areas: physical, polar, tropical, synoptic, mesoscale, or radar meteorology.
Desired
:
The ideal candidate should have a strong background in meteorology. Previous degrees in Atmospheric Sciences or Meteorology are preferred. The candidate’s research program may also leverage the Department of Geography’s newly available mobile phased array X-band radar coming online in winter 2026. Previous experience with university teaching is also desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate creativity, collegiality, and the capacity to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries within the department, the university, and the broader atmospheric sciences community.

The Department of Geography, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, recently celebrated its 100th birthday and is among the largest geography departments in the country. Our 20+ full-time faculty and eight staff members manage a graduate program with some 50 students and an undergraduate program with 450 majors. We are known nationally and internationally as a leader in social and environmental geography, GIS, spatial analysis, and atmospheric sciences and meteorology.
Our faculty include members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academies of Science. Faculty in the department’s Atmospheric Science Program study a range of climate-related phenomena including global and regional climate change, paleo climates, climate modeling, cryospheric assessment and impacts, tropical meteorology, atmospheric circulation, severe storms and tornado genesis, tropical glacier melt, drought, and atmosphere-surface interactions.
