Tenure-Track Faculty Position, Open Rank

Department:
Engineering | Computer Science and Engineering

Position Overview

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at The Ohio State University invites applications for an Open Rank (Assistant/Associate/Full) Tenure Track faculty appointment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) with important applications to healthcare, starting as early as Fall 2026. The Ohio State University is committed to cutting‑edge research, high‑quality teaching, and meaningful interdisciplinary collaborations that advance patient care and medical research.

We seek individuals whose work lies at the intersection of AI/ML and healthcare. Candidates must demonstrate significant AI expertise as a core element of their scholarship whether through the creation of new AI methods or the novel use of AI techniques that materially advance knowledge, methods, or practice in their discipline.

AI Fluency at The Ohio State University

Ohio State is leading a bold, groundbreaking initiative to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the undergraduate educational experience. This initiative will ensure that every Ohio State student, beginning with the class of 2029, will graduate being AI fluent — fluent in their field of study, and fluent in the application of AI in that field.

Through AI Fluency, Ohio State students will become ‘bilingual’ — fluent in both their major field of study and the application of AI in that area. Grounded with a strong sense of responsibility and possibility, we will prepare Ohio State’s students to harness the power of AI and to lead in shaping its future of their area of study. — Ravi V.

Bellamkonda, Executive Vice President and Provost – The Ohio State University

As part of this exciting initiative, Ohio State will look to hire 100 faculty with a focus on AI over the next five years. A particular area of focus for the initiative is redefining learning and innovation by embedding AI across the curriculum, equipping faculty, enabling student innovation and identifying and demonstrating progress towards AI fluency learning outcomes.

Position Overview
The faculty will join the AI(X) Hub at Ohio State, established to drive innovation, provide resources, and foster the development of foundational and applied AI. The AI(X) Hub will be organized around several pillars:
AI Foundations
, Health
, Engineering and Sciences
, Agriculture
, Trustworthy AI
, and Cybersecurity
. The Hub’s Faculty Hiring Initiative will elevate Ohio State’s national reputation specifically related to AI in addition to attracting top‑tier academic talent and secure external funding.

This advertised position will dovetail with similar positions in the soon to be stood up AI in Health Pillar of the AI(X) Hub. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with Health Pillar (primary) and the AI Foundations Pillar (secondary). It is very likely that the research focus of the Health Pillar will include: (a) AI‑Driven Therapeutics Discovery;

(b) AI‑Enabled Precision Medicine; (c) AI Implementation and Translation; (d) AI Education in Health and (e) Scalable and Robust AI Infrastructure for Health.

Further, the candidate will have the opportunity to work with faculty in the colleges of Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Ophthalmology on topics among others related to aging, adult and pediatric well‑being, and diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular, mental, and metabolic disorders (e.g., diabetes). In addition to the AI(X) Hub, the candidate would have the opportunity to engage with the Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Cancer Engineering Center, and the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno‑Oncology all of which can be source of further collaborations and resources.

The successful candidate will be positioned to harness the department’s world‑class expertise in artificial intelligence, anchored by two NSF‑funded AI institutes and an NSF‑funded Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) institute, alongside other major research centers with substantial funding. This rich ecosystem offers unparalleled opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and leadership in cutting‑edge AI…
