Department

The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center seeks research scientists to join the Department of Emergency Medicine. Academic rank and track commensurate with academic record and experience.

Position Overview

At OSUWMC, we are committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care. The mission of the Department of Emergency Medicine is to provide innovative, efficient, safe, and compassionate patient care to patients presenting to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Emergency Departments and Advanced Urgent Cares; to be a leader in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows in emergency medical care;

to perform cutting-edge research and scholarly investigation to identify the causes, treatments, and prevention of emergency medical conditions; to promote transforming emergency medicine through innovation, faculty development, and excellence. Our vision is to transform emergency medicine through innovation. We are interested in candidates that complement our current strengths and support our tripartite mission – patient care, education, and clinical research.

We are seeking research scientists with expertise in emergency care. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with our scientists to advance the research mission of the department.

Department/Division Overview

The Department of Emergency Medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center operates across multiple locations, including the University Hospital Emergency Department, East Hospital Emergency Department, and Advanced Urgent Cares treating approximately 120,000 patients in the Emergency Departments and 55,000 patients in the Advanced Urgent Cares annually. The University Hospital Emergency Department has an Observation Unit, HBO Unit, and an Oncology Care Pod.

The emergency departments handle a diverse range of medical emergencies, from acute illnesses to traumatic injuries, while the advanced urgent care centers cater to more minor injuries and illnesses, serving as an alternative for non-life-threatening emergencies.

The Department of Emergency Medicine offers two residency programs. The Emergency Medicine (EM) Residency Program is a three-year program designed to provide education and experience in the clinical, educational, administrative and research aspects of emergency medicine and its allied fields. The Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine (EM/IM) Combined Residency Program has combined excellence in leadership, residency training as well as academic and patient care opportunities.

Research is a core mission of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Our research program is supported by multiple federal and industry grants and spans clinical, basic science and translational research realms.

The department has two divisions. The Division of Ultrasound Medicine is focused on providing quality patient care utilizing state-of-the-art ultrasound techniques. The Division of Basic and translational science efforts focus on development of stem cell therapy and elicitation of the role of non-coding RNAs in acute heart failure recovery.

Faculty responsibilities are consistent with our tripartite mission, with focus on clinical research. The research-scientist will work collaboratively with individuals within and outside the department to conduct research in emergency care. We expect these efforts to result in publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. We expect the candidate to pursue and maintain NIH or other equivalent extramural funding.
