Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support and oversee core accounting functions within our construction organization. This role plays a key part in the monthly close process, job cost accounting, financial reporting, and mentoring junior accounting staff. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical accounting skills, experience in the construction industry, and the ability to excel in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
Salary range: $65,000-$75,000
Responsibilities- Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including complex journal entries and account reconciliations
- Oversee job cost accounting, project budgets, WIP schedules, and percentage-of-completion reporting
- Review subcontractor pay applications, lien waivers, and compliance documentation
- Monitor retainage, change orders, and contract billing
- Prepare and analyze financial statements and management reports
- Partner with project managers to review project performance, cost variances, and forecasting
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and construction accounting standards
- Assist with audits, tax filings, bonding requirements, and lender reporting
- Support system implementations, process improvements, and internal controls
- Mentor and review work of junior accounting staff
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with construction industry experience strongly preferred
- Advanced knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP schedules, and revenue recognition
- Proficiency with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Procore, Quick Books) and Excel preferred
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage competing deadlines in a dynamic, project-based environment
- CPA or CPA candidate preferred
- Experience with multi-entity, multi-state, or union environments
- Knowledge of certified payroll, prevailing wage, and contract compliance
- Prior experience supporting audits and financial reviews
