Essential Duties
Duties will include the following and other responsibilities as assigned:
Scholar Supervision and Residential Life
- Supervise a residence hall wing of approximately 15 scholars.
- Maintain consistent presence in assigned residential areas and during scheduled activities.
- Facilitate nightly wing meetings and engage scholars in structured team-building and community activities.
- Enforce residential expectations, including lights-out and curfew.
- Conduct head counts as assigned during programs and events.
- Be punctual for and actively participate in all assigned programming.
- Assist with facilitating and supervising recreational activities, events, and programs.
- Chaperone on- and off-campus activities and field trips as assigned.
- Move with scholars from event to event to ensure supervision, safety, and adherence to schedules.
- Assist with logistical support, including scholar check-in and check-out processes.
- Relay information to scholars as directed by the Head Resident or Assistant Director.
- Report concerns immediately to the Head Resident, including homesickness, interpersonal conflicts, behavioral concerns, emotional distress, or maintenance issues.
- Participate in daily dorm or residential staff meetings with the Head Resident and other Resident Assistants.
- Assist with administrative and office tasks as needed.
- Take inventory of supplies and materials.
- Distribute mail and program materials.
- Reconcile forms and assist with data collection.
- Deliver materials to classrooms or program locations as requested.
- Mandatory Training Dates: May 28 - May 30, 2026
- Early Check-In: Staff may be required to check in as early as May 27, 2026, based on program needs and individual role assignments. Early arrival expectations will be communicated in advance.
Minimum Qualifications
- Availability for the full duration of the Mississippi Governor's School program, including required training days.
- Interest in working with high school-aged scholars in a residential program setting.
- Ability to work effectively with others for extended periods of time in a team-based environment.
- Basic word processing and computer skills.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm, patient, and professional in group settings and high-energy environments.
- Minimum age of 18 years at the start of the program (20 years preferred).
- Ability to stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods of time.
If program staffing needs and space allow, Mississippi Governor's School may hire a limited number of Resident Assistants in Training (RATs). RATs serve in a supervised, developmental role alongside experienced residential staff and support scholar supervision and program activities under close guidance. RATs must be at least 18 years of age prior to the start of the program. Specific duties and assignments for RATs are determined by program leadership and adjusted to reflect training status and readiness.
Job Description Summary
Resident Assistants provide direct, day-to-day supervision and support for Mississippi Governor's School scholars in a residential program setting, focusing on all aspects of scholar life outside of the faculty-led classroom experience. The position supports scholar safety, engagement, and community-building during residential life, recreation, evening programming, free time, and off-campus activities. Resident Assistants supervise assigned residence hall wings, facilitate nightly meetings and group activities, assist with program and recreational events, support logistics and administrative needs, and promptly report concerns to the Head Resident.
