Job Summary
The Campus Safety Officer is an unarmed, non-sworn position within the Columbus State University Police Department. This position provides security support to the residence halls. Responsibilities include patrolling the designated residence hall, lobby areas, hallways, exterior entrances/exits, and other areas within or immediately around the residence hall. The officer monitors access by checking student identification, declines access when appropriate, and registers guests during assigned work hours.
Additional duties may be assigned by a supervisor. The officer will be courteous and professional and must adhere to the policies and procedures in the Columbus State University Police Department Manual. The officer represents CSU and must maintain a high standard of conduct both on and off duty while safeguarding law enforcement sensitive information.
Workdays are primarily defined as Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Work hours are defined as 9 pm to 3 am.
What is a Campus Security Authority (CSA)?
The law defines a CSA as an official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including but not limited to student housing, student discipline, and campus judicial proceedings.
Responsibilities
- Greet visitors and residents entering the residence hall.
- Walk the residence hall and parking areas to ensure CSU's rules and regulations are upheld.
- Verify that students entering the building are residents.
- Alert University Police of criminal activity.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or Georgia State accredited GED certificate required; associate's degree or higher preferred.
- Valid driver's license required.
- No felony convictions or crimes of moral turpitude.
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. 20/20 or 20/20 corrected.

- Provide guidance to the public in emergency situations.
- Ability to follow directions from a supervisor.
- Able to work shifts that support a 24-hour operation including holidays, nights, and weekends.
