Open to currently enrolled veterinary students. An externship at an NVA hospital provides hands-on clinical experience and a view of day-to-day operations. Although each NVA hospital varies, all externships share a commitment to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their people.
Responsibilities- Work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience gathering patient histories and performing physical exams.
- Create treatment plans, order and interpret diagnostics, and provide dentistry services as appropriate.
- Observe, assist with, or perform surgical procedures and participate in medical management of patients.
- Develop and practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Housing may be available for externs in some instances.
Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Details on the stipend program are provided by the employer.
