Job Summary:

Performs high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter surgery utilizing the ASPCA/Humane Alliance model. Provides wellness veterinary services and non-spay/neuter surgeries when needed. All duties are performed in alignment with the mission and vision of Paws Humane Society. Works closely with the Director of Clinic Operations to ensure standards of care are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform pre-surgery physical examinations or visual assessments of free-roaming cats in humane traps to determine suitability for anesthesia and surgery.
  • Document exam findings and any adverse events in medical records.
  • Provide high-volume wellness care to public clients.
  • Examine, diagnose, and treat post-surgical complications.
  • May be required to provide after-hours and weekend emergency care for shelter animals.
  • Maintain knowledge of and adhere to laws, regulations, and industry best practices related to clinic and shelter operations.
  • Ensure timely and high-quality service to pets, caregivers, and shelter animals.
  • Conduct daily rounds to observe shelter animals and respond to behavioral or physical concerns.
  • Train and supervise shelter staff on animal care, sanitation, and well-being protocols.
  • Determine when euthanasia is appropriate and perform it according to protocol, consulting with the Executive Director for complex cases.
  • Make medical decisions for shelter animals, considering cost and treatment options, in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with local veterinarians and shelter professionals to foster positive relationships.
  • Engage with volunteers professionally and respectfully, expressing gratitude for their service.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
  • Qualifications and Knowledge:

    • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution.
    • Minimum of one year of professional veterinary experience.
    • Valid veterinary license in Georgia.
    • Knowledge of current veterinary practices related to high-volume spay/neuter, vaccinations, and animal health management.
    • Understanding of shelter animal health protocols and relevant laws and regulations.

    Capabilities:

    • Physical ability to perform tasks involving stooping, kneeling, lifting, and carrying moderate weights.
    • Proficiency with surgical instruments, diagnostic equipment, and computer systems.
    • Coordination of visual, manual, and physical skills for surgical procedures and injections.
    • Ability to recognize differences in colors, shapes, sounds, tastes, odors, and textures related to veterinary tasks.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills with clients, staff, volunteers, and authorities.
    • Ability to supervise, manage, teach, and plan activities, exercising independent judgment.
    • Resilience to environmental factors such as odors, noise, and potential hazards.
