Position: Geotechnical Staff Engineer

Location: Auburn, AL or Columbus, GA

Terms: Direct Hire

Pay Rate: Competitive, based on experience

Seneca Resources is seeking a Staff Geotechnical Engineer (EIT) to support a growing portfolio of infrastructure and development projects in Columbus, GA. This is an excellent opportunity for an early‑career civil or geotechnical engineer who is looking to build hands‑on field experience, strengthen technical expertise, and work toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

In this role, you will support geotechnical investigations, perform engineering analysis, assist with foundation and earthwork design recommendations, and contribute to technical reporting and project coordination. You’ll collaborate closely with experienced Professional Engineers while gaining exposure to diverse projects across public works, transportation, commercial, energy, and industrial sectors.

This position is ideal for a motivated engineer who thrives in both field and office environments and is eager to grow into increased project and client responsibility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Geotechnical Engineering & Field Investigations
    • Conduct and coordinate subsurface investigations, soil borings, and site observations.
    • Perform engineering calculations and analysis related to soil mechanics, foundation design, slope stability, and earthwork under PE supervision.
    • Interpret laboratory and field data for inclusion in geotechnical reports.
    • Assist with developing engineering recommendations and resolving construction‑related challenges.
    • Review construction activities for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Technical Reporting & Project Support
    • Prepare draft geotechnical engineering reports, proposals, cost estimates, and technical documents.
    • Assist with scope development, budgeting, and scheduling for small projects.
    • Support QA/QC processes.
    • Coordinate laboratory testing and evaluation of results.
  • Client Interaction & Team Collaboration
    • Communicate project progress, findings, and recommendations to clients and internal teams.
    • Work closely with senior engineers and the Professional Engineer of Record to develop project management skills.
    • Supervise and coordinate field staff, technicians, and laboratory personnel as needed.
    • Participate in safety planning and ensure adherence to safety standards and best practices.
Required Skills / Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 1–3 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, or related fieldwork.
  • Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) or Engineering Intern (EI) certification required.
  • Experience or exposure to:
    • Subsurface investigations and soil testing.
    • Geotechnical analysis and engineering calculations.
    • Foundation and earthwork recommendations.
    • Technical report writing.
    • Construction observation and inspection.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work in both field and office settings.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Clear path toward PE licensure and career advancement.
  • Hands‑on experience in geotechnical field investigations and design.
  • Exposure to diverse infrastructure and development projects.
  • Collaborative team environment with mentorship from experienced engineers.
