Position: Concrete Worker (Open until filled)
Job Summary:

Performs skilled construction, maintenance and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility. May provide lead or lead expert supervision over other workers.

Essential Functions:
  • Performs skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work, such as electrical wiring, finishing concrete, plumbing or carpentry;
  • May provide lead expertise for a small work crew;
  • Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to safety, barricading, hazardous material, direction of traffic and operation of equipment;
  • Maintains daily work records and prepares safety reports; may perform computerized data entry work;
  • Notifies the public of work activities and answers questions;
  • Performs maintenance and minor repair on the equipment;
  • Constructs new streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and handicap ramps;
  • Maintains, cleans and repairs and builds streets, storm drain, parking lots, curbs, gutters, box culvert, bridges, sidewalks and handicap ramps;
  • Sets forms and performs concrete work for chain link fences, block walls, meter and traffic bases, stems and footings;
  • May mix concrete; pours concrete in to some type of formwork;
  • Spreads and levels, and compacts concrete;
  • Mix, spread, compact, finish and cure concrete for buildings, bridges, tunnels and roads using hand tools, troweling machinery and other power tools;
  • Lay brick, block, rock, and perform masonry work;
  • Mix chemicals to make brine;
  • Removes surface imperfections before the concrete has fully hardened;
  • Control traffic passing near, in, or around work zones;
  • Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards;
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment, or materials;
  • Load, unload, or identify building materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans or specifications;
  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where construction work will be performed;
  • Erect or dismantle scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, or other temporary structures;
  • Display courteous, civil, and respectful behavior to all persons and shall make every effort to meet the needs of citizens requesting assistance;
  • Refrain from the use of abusive, indecent or profane language or gestures in the workplace, in the performance of duties or in the presence of a member of the public;
  • Perform duties in a manner that is fair, impartial, and without prejudice toward any person or group;
  • Refrain from arguing unnecessarily with any person or otherwise showing a lack of self-control, ridicule, or defame any employee, elected official or any other person or any agency of the City of Columbia;
  • Display responsibility for attendance and promptness and report to the work area on time.
Secondary Functions:

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills:
  • Explains and resolves a variety of problems that may arise on the work site during repairs or new construction and installation;
  • Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment;
  • Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned area of responsibility;
  • Must possess computer application skills that at a minimum include Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Excel;
  • Knowledge of work zone safety, traffic control and flagging.
Ability:
  • Read and understand blue prints, maps;
  • Deal courteously with the public and answer citizen questions;
  • Safety barricade work sites; understand and follow safe working practices;
  • Determine what equipment, tools, manpower and materials will be needed to complete assigned projects;
