The Work Planner/Traveler is responsible for authorizing, revising, and maintaining clear, compliant, and executable work instructions (including Travelers, procedures, and step-by-step packages) that ensure safe, quality-assured fabrication, inspection, and testing. This role bridges engineering design, quality requirements, and shop floor execution directly reducing rework, NCR's, and schedule delays.
This would be a great role for someone looking to move out of fabrication and share their skills with others through developing work instructions that can be easily followed.
Key Responsibilities
Traveler & Work Instruction Development

- Analyze fabrication sequences for complex, components and assemblies to optimize manufacturing flow, minimize rework, and ensure efficient resource utilization
- Incorporate safety, engineering, and quality requirements directly into each traveler
- Define fabrication sequences, inspection steps, and verification requirements to ensure proper flow and control of fabrication activities
- Integrate project specific requirements and critical hold/inspection points to maintain full compliance with the NQA-1 Quality Assurance Program
- Establish material requirements and staging needs for planned work packages
- Coordinate with quality control (QC) personnel to ensure all required inspections, signoffs, and documentation are properly integrated and executed within the Traveler
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and QC teams to identify and implement improvements to planning processes, traveler structure, and shop floor execution efficiency
- Coordinate release of travelers, manage revisions, and ensure only approved versions are utilized on the shop floor
- Proven experience as a Work Planner, Manufacturing Planner, or similar role in a technical or manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and write technical documents, procedures, and engineering drawings
- Direct experience operating under the requirements of NQA-1 or a similarly strict Quality Management System (e.g. ISO
9001, AS9100) - Strong understanding of typical metal fabrication, welding, machining, and assembly sequences
- Collaborate with quality control (QC) to embed inspection, sign-off, and documentation requirements into travelers
- Ensure fabrication documentation meets the expectations of ASME, NQA-1, and project specific quality plans
- Verify all instructions meet configuration management and document control requirements before release
- Review traveler accuracy and completeness during internal readiness checks and project audits
- Analyze fabrication and assembly sequences to optimize workflow, reduce rework, and enhance resource utilization
- Engage with engineering, production, and QC to identify opportunities for improving traveler format, usability, and shop floor efficiency
- Standardize traveler templates, formatting, and visual design for ease of understanding by craft and inspection personnel
- Participate in root cause analysis and lessons learned sessions related to traveler errors, rework, or fabrication delays
- Collaborate with engineering to ensure the latest revision drawings and specifications are used
- Communicate traveler updates and changes to fabrication, QA, and document control
- Support audit readiness by ensuring all traveler packages are traceable, signed, and properly filed upon job completion
- Maintain alignment with AVANTech NQA-1 and ASME Section VIII/B31.3 programs, ensuring every traveler supports code compliance and customer satisfaction
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Manufacturing Technology, or related technical field or 5 plus years or direct shop floor experience in fabrication or planning
