Technical Services Operations Manager Role Overview
The Technical Services Operations Manager is responsible for leading, developing, and scaling the technical services team while actively supporting field operations. This role blends operational leadership with hands‑on technical expertise to ensure exceptional service delivery, high customer satisfaction, and continuous internal capability building. The manager will oversee project execution, resource planning, estimating, safety, and team development across a wide range of electrical service offerings.
Leadership& Team Development
- Recruit, train, and mentor technical service personnel, including electricians, technicians, technologists, and engineers.
- Build and maintain internal technical training programs and certification pathways to elevate team capability.
- Foster a culture centered on safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct performance reviews, set development goals, and provide individualized coaching and progression plans.
- Perform hands‑on electrical evaluations, inspections, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance across low, medium, high, and extra‑high voltage systems.
- Lead complex field projects while the team is developing, modeling industry best practices on‑site.
- Provide advanced technical guidance, problem‑solving, and mentorship during field operations.
- Support emergency response needs and participate in on‑call rotations when required.
- Oversee and execute technical service projects, including maintenance programs, commissioning, equipment upgrades, and lifecycle replacements.
- Ensure all work is delivered on‑time, on‑budget, and in compliance with relevant industry standards (NETA, NFPA, IEEE).
- Prepare pre‑job plans, MOPs, safety documentation, and client‑facing deliverables.
- Coordinate with internal departments for project hand‑offs, scheduling, procurement, and billing.
- Develop, maintain, and optimize daily/weekly schedules for technical staff, equipment, subcontractors, and field resources.
- Track job progress and field performance within company systems.
- Collaborate with other offices across the US and Canada to share resources, align standards, and support regional growth.
- Prepare accurate estimates and quotes for technical service projects and lifecycle maintenance work.
- Support the business development team with pricing, scope development, and responses to RFPs.
- Identify opportunities for expanded services, pull‑through work, and long‑term client relationships.
- Ensure all work adheres to company safety policies and applicable codes and standards (CEC, OHSA, NFPA, NETA, IEEE).
- Perform routine site inspections and proactively address potential hazards.
- Review and validate technical reports, testing documentation, and deliverables before client submission.
- Track project costs, labor hours, equipment usage, and job profitability.
- Approve timesheets and ensure timely and accurate billing.
- Provide billing forecasts, job cost reporting, and resource utilization analysis.
- Optimize workforce planning to balance cost efficiency with service quality.
- Development of an independent, high‑performing technical service team within 12–18 months.
- Percentage of projects delivered on‑time, on‑budget, and without rework.
- Completion rates of training programs and internal certification milestones.
- Client satisfaction scores, repeat business, and service growth.
- Safety performance—including zero incidents and proactive hazard reporting.
- 5+ years of NETA or NICET field testing experience (electrical testing, commissioning, or maintenance).
- Prior supervision or operations management experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems from low voltage through extra‑high voltage.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Proven experience leading technical teams in the electrical testing or service industry.
- Ability to manage complex field projects while coaching and developing staff.
- Strong knowledge of NETA, NFPA, IEEE standards, and industry best practices.
