Who We Are

At the Community Action Council of Howard County (CAC), our mission is to diminish poverty and enable self‑sufficiency for all Howard County individuals, families, and children in need. We focus on five critical services: housing assistance, food assistance, energy assistance, weatherization assistance, and early childhood education. CAC impacts our local society by changing lives and helping create a pathway through and out of poverty or simply providing a hand up when needed.

Who

You Are

As an Assistant Teacher at CAC, you are dedicated to providing a positive learning environment based on sound developmentally appropriate practices for children ages 3‑5. You play a crucial role in supporting CAC’s mission by adhering to education, health, safety, and nutritional practices established by CAC’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborative Lesson Planning:
Work closely with the lead teacher to develop and implement lesson plans aligned with the ECE Curriculum, Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework, and Maryland Early Learning Standards.
  • Child Development:
Support each child's individual learning and development by providing a developmentally appropriate environment, including suitable equipment and opportunities for self‑expression.
  • Screening and Assessment:
Assist in completing the Agency’s developmental and behavioral screening within the mandated 45 days. Participate in ongoing assessments, including observations, quarterly assessments, and developmental checklists.
  • Classroom Management:
Maintain classroom management and educational instruction in the absence of the lead teacher, ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment.
  • Inclusive

    Education:

Follow the child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) to ensure inclusivity for children with disabilities.
  • Program Implementation:
Contribute to the implementation of a daily program with quality teacher and child‑initiated activities, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Collaboration:

Work collaboratively with staff, supervisors, administrators, co‑workers, community professionals, clients, vendors, and parents.
  • Parental Involvement:
Invite parents to become integral parts of the program by providing opportunities for participation in classroom and agency activities.

    Perform other duties as assigned.
