Overview

The City of Colton Community Services Department is looking for enthusiastic, team players that will be responsible for the safety and care of the community members who visit the pool. This includes teaching swim lessons, lifeguarding during pool parties, and providing a safe environment for aquatic fitness opportunities.

Responsibilities
  • Enforce all pool and facility rules.
  • Accurately conduct and record water quality tests.
  • Perform facility inspections on equipment to ensure proper working condition.
  • Prevent injuries and minimize hazardous situations.
  • Assist in planning and conducting in-service training and lifeguard drills.
  • Provide patron surveillance whenever a patron is in the water.
  • Respond to injuries, accidents and emergency situations as they arise.
  • Instruct various ages in swimming, water safety, and other aquatic programming.
  • Complete assigned cleaning duties.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Training and Experience

Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:

Education
:
Enrolled in and attending High School or GED for candidates under 18. A High School Diploma or GED is required for candidates 18 or older.

Experience
: A minimum of three (3) months of lifeguarding and/or swim instructor experience.

Special Requirements
  • Must be 17 years of age or older (minimum legal requirements for working minors, including a work permit).
  • Possession of a valid California Identification card or School  of a valid California Driver's license is desired.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain at time of appointment, and maintain the following American Red Cross certifications:
    • Lifeguarding/First Aid
    • CPR/AED for Lifeguards
Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Knowledge: Aquatic programming for various age groups; record keeping and statistical computations; basic customer service principles and techniques; basic conflict resolution principles; leadership and consensus-building techniques.

Ability: Communicate clearly with patrons of all ages; establish and maintain effective working relationships; follow written and oral instructions; appear for work on time in presentable uniform; provide accurate information; supervise lifeguard patron surveillance; facilitate aquatic activities for participants of all ages and abilities; positively represent the City of Colton; perform light pool maintenance following instructions.

Skill

Maintain American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards.

Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions

The majority of work is performed outdoors at a swimming pool. Tasks include standing, walking, running on slippery surfaces, kneeling, crouching, twisting, swimming, reaching, bending, crawling, pushing/pulling/grasping, and lifting equipment up to 50 pounds. The role requires quick response to lifesaving emergencies and may involve strenuous physical activity. Exposure to pool water and chemicals, cleaning solvents, disinfectants, electrical and mechanical hazards, and potential health risks may occur.

The incumbent must meet physical requirements and have suitable mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity.

Working Conditions

Exposed to extreme heat and various weather conditions; work on slippery or uneven surfaces; moderate to high noise levels.
