The 2025 Step Pay Program may increase the salary range for employees with time in the class series.
Total annual compensation for this position is $53,400 (base pay).
Base pay for this position is $2,053.85 biweekly ($53,400 annually). There are 26 pay periods in a year. The hourly rate is $25.67/hour, with an overtime rate of $38.51/hour.
What You Will Do
No two days are exactly the same in CDOT highway maintenance. Your activities vary based on project needs, weather, environment, and road conditions. You will be on-call on a rotating basis and respond to weather and other emergencies. Typically, you'll work in a team environment with at least one lead highway maintenance specialist and multiple specialists at each location. Your main activities include:
- Plowing snow
- Operating heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, tractors, etc.
- Mowing grass and weeds
- Removing debris from roadways, including rocks, mud, and deceased animals
- Clearing debris from culverts, tunnels, etc.
- Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
- Installing and repairing guardrails, highway markers, signs, warning signs, and lighting
- Filling potholes and roadway cracks
- Setting out signs and cones for traffic control
- Removing and covering graffiti
- Installing pavement markings and striping
- Managing traffic in emergency situations
- Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs
- Following safety guidelines and wearing proper safety equipment
- Exposure to loud noises, fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc., affecting breathing, eyes, and skin
- Using appropriate personal protective equipment
- Working with chemicals and cleaning products
- Some equipment requires respirators
- Working near traffic, sometimes at high speeds
- Using ladders and scissor lifts up to 20 feet high
- Driving CDOT vehicles
- Responding to emergencies outside regular hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays
- Working in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and at elevations up to 12,000 feet for extended periods
