General

A Transportation Maintenance Worker I assigned to Park County Public Works is an entry-level position and performs semi-skilled procedures in Public Works maintenance and construction in roadways, right-of-ways and easements.

Essential Duties
  • Operate heavy equipment including motor grader, loader and/or single and tandem axle plow trucks for road maintenance, construction and snow removal.
  • Be available to assist with emergencies and snow removal at any time including weekends and holidays.
  • Perform entry level operator maintenance on equipment and vehicles including preventive maintenance and assisting with major repairs on occasion such as tire repair, replacement of cutting edges, etc.
  • Perform manual labor including lifting 50 pounds routinely and 80 pounds on occasion for patching, culvert maintenance, crack sealing, etc.
  • Must be able to put tire chains on trucks and equipment.
  • Assist with drainage operations including but not limited to culvert installation, culvert cleaning, culvert thawing and potholing for utilities.
  • Assist with flagging during traffic control operations.
  • Participate in (Emergency Support Functions) ESF 1 and ESF 3.
  • Must attend additional trainings as required through LTAP or other programs along with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Flagger Certifications.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrate basic ability to provide day-to-day maintenance of equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
  • Reasonable effective verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
Schedule/Hours

Some evenings, weekends and holidays may be required. The normal work week is 40 hours. Overtime may be required for projects, emergencies and snow removal. Employees will report to their assigned shop or assigned work location and may be reassigned based upon needs of the Public Works Department. Operation hours are 6:00am to 4:30pm. Overtime may be approved or required by Fleet Manager or Director.

of Contact with others

This position requires occasional contact with the public and other Park County Employees. All Employees shall act in a courteous and professional manner at all times while on duty, and shall present a professional appearance consistent with assigned tasks. All Employees shall become familiar with and follow the chain of command.

Responsibility for Property, Materials, Money and Confidential Information

This position is responsible for the equipment and materials used during job performance. The use of Park County vehicles and equipment is provided only for the purpose of performing tasks related to Park County Public Works. If necessary, employees may be provided a county vehicle for a temporary reassignment of their reporting location, which may be subject to reassignment. Ultimately it is the responsibility of the employee to provide their own transportation to and from work.

Working

Environment/Physical Activities

Employees will report to their assigned shop or assigned work location and may be reassigned based upon needs of the Public Works Department. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in all types of conditions including rain, snow, ice and extreme temperatures. This position may require exposure to dirt, grease and chemicals typical in a construction environment or maintenance shop.

The employees are frequently required to walk, sit, stand, use arms, legs, hands, feet and meet DOT (Department of Transportation) physical requirements. The ability to lift and carry 50 pounds routinely and up to 100 pounds on occasion. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) will be provided to employees as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One - two years’ experience in similar or related field preferred but not required
  • To achieve 50% or greater of pay a Class B CDL is required
  • Must possess current DOT Medical Card
  • Must pass background check
Special Requirements

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must pass background check
  • Must pass pre-employment motor vehicle record check
  • Must pass pre-employment alcohol and drug test
  • Must pass pre-employment Equipment Testing and/or Driver’s Road Test Examination
Miscellaneous Information

Six Month Probation:
At the end of the six-month probation employees are required to possess a minimum of a Class B, or A CDL including tanker endorsement. The following job duties should be attainable at the end of the six-month probation period. Successful completion of New Miner MSHA training, including knowledge of all rules and regulations to work in Park County gravel pits, Possess a Flagger Certification Card.
