Job Summary

Apprentice Driver Residential – Join the WM team to learn safe commercial driving and become a full‐time driver. The apprentice will complete training under a seasoned WM Driver or Driver Trainer and operate a commercial refuse/recycling vehicle.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate vehicle in accordance with WM Safety & Life Critical Rules, OSHA and DOT requirements and all applicable local, state and federal laws.
  • Perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections and document checks using the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report).
  • Immediately report all unsafe situations or service‑related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Operations Manager.
  • Work closely with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
  • Notify Operations Manager of incidents, accidents, injuries or property damage.
  • Communicate customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager.
  • Completely dump all receptacles, leaving the location clean and debris‑free.
  • Follow route assignments, complete end‑of‑day documentation and check‑out process.
  • Assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
  • While on route, load and empty residential/commercial containers, manually or mechanically, and assist with backing maneuvers.
  • Operate hoisting devices and lift bins or containers into the truck hopper as required.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Successfully complete and pass a pre‑employment drug screen.
  • Current state‑issued standard Driver’s License.
  • Education:

    No college education required.
  • Experience:

    No previous experience required.
Work Environment
  • Work primarily outdoors and/or driving a vehicle.
  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity for most of the workday.
  • Physical effort in handling objects up to 50–70 lbs occasionally.
  • Exposure to dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes and occasional occupational risks.
