Broomfield's Environmental Lab is a unique team of 8 full-time staff who share responsibilities for sampling and testing drinking water, reservoirs and ponds. We have a shared commitment to serving the community through our high-quality analytical work, and we enjoy taking on new projects in response to changing technology and organizational needs. We are looking for a Senior Water Quality Analyst to join our team who is passionate about understanding the impact and application of their work, specifically how the data they produce tells the story of the environment in which it was collected, informs decision making, and helps ensure safe drinking water for our residents..

This is an essential team member in the lab who collects samples and performs instrumental analyses, such as IC or GCMS, and conducts microbial analysis by HPC or presence/absence methods. Titrations, gravimetric tests, and other basic water quality tests may also be assigned. This position is regularly scheduled Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm.

Responsibilities
  • Performs advanced analytical tests and field monitoring that supports planned water monitoring programs to assess water quality and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conducts complex analyses and data management activities, including various manual and instrumental chemical and microbiological analyses, using established written procedures or as directed by supervisor. Prepares laboratory reagents, analytical standards and microbiological media.
  • Researches new technologies and analytical methods to expand and improve support to CCOB Water treatment facilities.
  • Performs laboratory instrument and equipment maintenance: cleans, maintains, and calibrates equipment and instrumentation; troubleshoots equipment problems using technical manuals, manufacturer's support personnel, or judgment and experience; performs routine cleaning/decontamination/disinfection of glassware, working surfaces, and equipment. Schedules service as needed.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding water or wastewater quality and other environmental concerns.
  • Collects and preserves samples from reservoirs, streams, ponds, wells, water distribution system; performs related analyses.
  • Performs Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures required for data validation and laboratory certifications. Performs calculations necessary to compute volumes, concentrations, and convert raw data to usable format; uses computer to enter data into database and prepare spreadsheets, summaries and reports.
  • Trains other analysts in sampling and analysis methods and laboratory techniques and assists with analytical problems, instrument failures, or data errors.
  • Maintains chemical and equipment stock to ensure adequate stock and prevent downtime.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all required safety equipment.
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or related field - required
Experience
  • 3 years experience required in water/wastewater analysis, including proficient operation of laboratory instrumentation such as Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer, Ion Chromatograph, and Gas Chromatograph

Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
