Forestry Technician

This position is located in Canon City, CO at the Royal Gorge Field Office in the Rocky Mountain District. We expect to fill one vacancy at this time; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available. This is a temporary appointment. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status and will be for a period not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year.

Responsibilities
  • Collects and compiles forest and woodland management data regarding location, size, character, extent, volume, rate of growth, and quality of timber.
  • Collects forest inventory data from timber cruises, prepares timber sales, performs timber markings in forest development projects, road layout projects, and other work.
  • Inspects and reports on timber sale areas to determine compliance with contract requirements.
  • Marks or otherwise designates timber to be removed in timber sales or for use disposals.
  • Collects information for, and prepares necessary reports on, forest and woodland trespass cases.
Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for the 0462 Forestry Technician Series at the GS-07:

  • You must possess one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity that includes performing the following duties: (1) Assisting professional foresters by gathering a variety of resource information for the forestry portion of resource analysis and management planning documents; (2) Researching and drafting assigned segments of documents; (3) Administering limited timber sales contracts;

    (4) Preparing forest road layouts.
  • OR You must have completed one full year of graduate level education (18 semester hours) that is directly related to the position. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. The education must be obtained in an accredited college or university. Official transcripts must be provided.
  • OR You must possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must be directly related to the work of the position. Official transcripts must be provided.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical

Demands

The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting. Field work may occasionally require the incumbent to climb ladders and trees.

Work Environment

Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air‑conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The work may occasionally require working  incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

Education

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS‑05 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS‑07.

If using education to qualify, you must submit copies of all transcripts or a list of college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university.
