Summary

These positions may be filled for a six month seasonal period, but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty:

Duties
  • Conduct regularly scheduled Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) patrols of park resources such as backcountry and/or wilderness areas, park trails, campgrounds, parking lots, shorelines, rivers, docks, roads, concessions, etc., in accordance with well-established procedures and precedents.
  • Provide visitors with information and education to ensure their safety, obtain their cooperation, and facilitate safe visitor use of park resources while on patrol.
  • Provide administrative, operational, and logistic support to PSAR-related educational activities conducted by the organization in accordance with well-established practices and precedents.
  • Serve as a member of a Search and Rescue (SAR) Team on events that may require trail response, ground/hasty searches, helicopter evacuations, river rescues, body recoveries, and/or litter carries.
  • Under medical oversight, provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients. Respond to and return safely from EMS assistance/calls.
Physical Demands

This position includes a mixture of duties that can be sedentary as well as physically demanding. Patrols, all-hazard incident response, search and rescue, watercraft operation, etc., may require extended periods of standing, walking, hiking, riding, rowing, and carrying heavy items (>50 pounds) over long distances, including safety and rescue supplies for injured/ill park visitors. Employees who participate in all-hazard incident operations in certain roles may be required to meet fitness requirements on a continuing basis.

Environment

The work can include moderate risks or discomforts that require safety precautions (e.g., exposure to extreme temperatures, rough terrain, wild animals, pests). The incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing or gear (e.g., masks, boots, gloves). Some employees may be engaged in all-risk operations with exposure to high risk situations requiring safety and other precautions.

Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Government housing is available.
  • You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • If selected for a position/location that requires search and rescue, emergency response, use of firearms, or watercraft operation, you will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative result prior to appointment. This position is subject to random drug testing.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle; a valid driver’s license is required. You must submit driving records as part of the application process.
  • Some positions require certification to perform emergency medical response. Level of certification may vary by location.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Pre-employment medical exam and drug testing are required.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
