About the opportunityThe Nurse Practitioner for the Shaw Cancer Center & the Shaw at Home program with Vail Health plays a significant role both within the cancer center, as well as within the communities of those we serve. This position serves a dually critical role: first as an embedded and regarded nurse practitioner involved in the care, planning, and oversight of treatment within the Shaw Cancer Center, and second in developing, implementing, and evaluating a specialist palliative care service to ensure Shaw Cancer Center patients receive high-quality care in both clinic and home-based settings.
Whatyou will do
- Provide safe therapeutic care in a holistic and systemic way, including assessment and overall management of care for oncology and palliative care patients in both clinic and home-based settings.
- Follow standards of care as outlined by Vail Health and the Colorado Nurse Practice Act.
- Exercise independent judgement in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of medical processes and procedures.
- Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others.
- Demonstrate respect for and understanding of other clinical disciplines and use an integrated approach to achieve desired patient outcomes.
- Utilize evidence-based standards, guidelines, and protocols for care delivery.
- Incorporate data and information to continuously improve care and practice.
- Ensure improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in lifelong learning.
- Provide direction and guidance to others regarding practice; act as a resource and mentor.
- Demonstrate leadership in decision making and problem solving.
- Perform patient care duties including comprehensive physical assessment, symptom management recommendations, ordering and interpretation of laboratory results, goals of care discussions, advance care planning, education, and research.
- Prescribe medications in accordance with state and federal guidelines, including controlled substances.
- Participate in Quality/Best Practice initiatives to improve cost-effective care delivery and patient outcomes.
- Collaborate with medical oncology and radiation oncology practices as an integral Shaw Cancer Center team member.
- Attend weekly chart rounds, routine staff meetings, CoC and other accreditation committees.
- Contribute to the development of the Shaw at Home program through policies, protocols, and guidelines.
- Participate in data collection, entry, assessment, and reporting as needed.
- Participate in routine palliative care Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings for debriefing, clinical case review, and ongoing education.
- Assist with scheduling and manage daily patient flow, ensuring prompt response to patient outreach by phone or email.
- Maintain appropriate balance of in-home visits, clinic visits, and administrative time.
- Complete accurate and timely documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Available for after-hour emergencies.
- Model the principles of a Just Culture and organizational values.
- Maintain HIPAA compliance.

What you will needExperience:
- Two years' experience as a nurse practitioner in a related area preferred.
- Two years of oncology experience preferred.
- Palliative and/or Hospice experience preferred.
Education:
- Required graduation from an accredited nursing master’s program.
License(s) and Certification(s):
- Must maintain a Colorado Nurse Practitioner license with prescriptive authority.
- DEA license required.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass Vail Health’s Motor Vehicle Report criteria required.
- Certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or National Certification Corporation (NCC).
