The Shelter Operations Manager (SOM) provides the leadership and management necessary to ensure that NMDR has the proper operations controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to effectively operate and grow. The ideal candidate will accomplish this through a respectful, constructive and energetic leadership and will be guided by NMDR’s life saving mission.

The SOM will provide general support to the Director of Operations (DO) and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and decisions in all areas of shelter operations, including but not limited to shelter programs and services, dog care, customer service, cleanliness of facility and staff management / human development in those areas.

Supervisory Responsibilities Direct reports include:
Adoptions Manager, Guest Relations Coordinator and Dog Care Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions

Lead and oversee the daily operations, programs and services at NMDR Peyton.
Lead with emotional intelligence and a can-do, positive motivational style.
Cultivate a culture of open communication, respect and collaboration that drive excellence and effectiveness across the organization while creating and maintaining the highest standards of animal care, enrichment and customer service.
Alongside DO, ensure that appropriate records are accurately created, maintained, and reported during the daily operations of the shelter and clinic. These include all PACFA documentation, reporting and Shelter Animals Count. Provide leadership for the inspection team ensuring all regulatory documentation is current.
Assist the DO with planning and budgeting. Analyze data and adjust processes and programs to achieve organizational financial goals.
Alongside DO, ensure that all established procedures and policies of the organization are appropriate, in keeping with current best practices, and reliably implemented. Foster a culture of a positive openness to change and a willingness to consider options and implement new strategies.
Ensure enrichment, sanitation, care, feeding, and disposition of our rescued dogs are performed daily with the utmost care and efficiencies. Ensure that animals are moving through the system efficiently and are made available for adoption in a timely manner.
Follow all local, state, and federal laws regarding animal housing, care, admission, disposition, and employee work-related matters. Ensure compliance with NMDR contractual agreements.
Handle HR concerns quickly and efficiently allowing opportunities to improve and succeed while ensuring all team members are always treating all fellow staff and volunteers with respect and compassion and everyone is working collaboratively and toward the overarching goals of the shelter and our mission.

Dog Care

Evaluate, develop, implement, manage, and monitor animal care and flow processes at the shelter and clinic including, but not limited to, rescue intake, animal handling, sanitation, feeding, health care, adoptions, foster care, that provide and result in the highest level of care and behavior treatment of our population.
Monitor dog population closely and coordinate with the DO/ED, providing accurate information about capacity at any given time.
Work collaboratively with the DO/ED to facilitate and/or support outbound transfers when appropriate.
Prepare the shelter and shelter pre-rescue arrivals to facilitate smooth offloads.
Create processes to ensure an appropriate inventory of supplies and pet food to ensure that staff members have adequate supplies and equipment to do their jobs.
Ensure high standards of care for the dogs under the care of NMDR shelter and clinic, including both physical and mental well-being.
Humane treatment:
Promote a caring attitude toward all dogs and always treat animals humanely and with compassion.

Customer Service

Model outstanding customer service including efficient, courteous interactions with members of the public.
Treat staff, volunteers, supporters, officials, and the public with dignity, respect, and courtesy. Foster a spirit of teamwork and perform duties in a manner that encourages community support and assists NMDR in achieving its goals.
